GBB vs AEG

I know there's a thread GBBR vs AEG, but this isn't the same deal.

A while back I remember reading some posts on how a properly upgraded GBB pistol could outshoot an AEG.

Now the main thing I'm wondering with this post is if a pistol could even be a good starting weapon. I know you wont get the same range as if you bought an M4 or M14 or what have you, but would a pistol be possibly a fun first gun?

theshaneler July 9th, 2010 00:50

lets look at the facts (based for use with outdoor)

GBB pistol:
range=shit-decent
it makes lots-o noise
most only fire in semi (ones that fire full auto usually implode after a short while)
small mags
relies on Gas that needs to be filled often

AEG:
range-decent-very good
quiet(er)
usually full auto capable.
all sorts of mags
relies on a battery that needs to be changed at most 1once a game (more for multiple day ops)

a well upgraded pistol can outshoot some stock AEGs but its very hard to use them as an effective primary outdoors.

its a whole different story in CQC though

Thenooblord July 9th, 2010 00:53

i dont know, I always do better when I game my pistols than when I game my AEGs, faster trigger response, and semi only doesnt really matter because I only use semi most of the time anyways, but my GBBs are highly upgraded, and yes some of them do outshoot AEGs

juicy July 9th, 2010 01:09

Depends which AEG or GBB you choose to start with, and what upgrades you put into it.

AEG's are easier to get into the game play of airsoft with; pistols as primaries is a very different game play style lol.

Pliskin July 9th, 2010 01:13

But thats what I'm looking for. I love being out-gunned so I need to be able to re-strategize and hopefully end up flanking and popping the entire team.

I do it with our clearsoft here, every once in a while. It ends up being slightly fun.

EDIT: I was mostly looking for a good debate on wether or not it IS gameable, and wont make me throw down the pistol in disgust yelling about how shitty airsoft is.

juicy July 9th, 2010 01:27

lol, well there you go then. Pistols with longer barrels (and thus more muzzle velocity) generally keep up better with AEG's on a field, from what I've seen. Examples are TM Hi-Capa's and TM MK23's. I've definitely seen a few Beretta's used as primaries, and those seem to get the job done in the right hands.

Remember to factor in the cost of buying a handful (or more) of mags. Running around with one mag in a pistol doesn't look like any fun.

Thenooblord July 9th, 2010 01:28

i did a game last week with my KWA M93R with only one mag and never ran out of ammo in any of the skirmishes

Pliskin July 9th, 2010 01:32

Also, with a pistol, can you throw on a surpressor to hide a longer inner barrel? Or is that hindering to the pistol itself?

EDIT: Also, I've been looking in Canada for an M93R. How's the KWA perform?

Thenooblord July 9th, 2010 01:41

the KWA is totally great, i love it, get AVed and I can tell you where to get one ;p
ive never found the need for a longer barrel in my pistols, they shoot great with the standard 5" (depending on model) barrels

Oh maybe that's just me and carrying enough loaded mags on me for two days worth of game play when I'm only out for half a day... lol.

Edit: As to nooblord's latest comment, I basically meant anything longer than a compact Glock will do you fine. Even then.. that might do. Just.... don't expect to be able to do too much with a Glock 27/26 if that's your primary. Or wait, maybe that's just the feel of the sub-compact Glocks... ah hell, I don't know. Pick something that you like and go with it. You'll be buying more guns anyway, lol. Eventually, those guns will be guns that suit your play style (at least, the ones you actually play with), so it'll all work out.

My TM mk23 will out range most stock AEG's. All it needs is a good tbb the nine ball hopup rubber and .28 bastards.

@ Thenooblord- I love my Raffica...more than one person lately has gotten a surprise when they figured I was semi auto only and decided to charge my position.

Have you found a Canadian Seller for Magazines, or a shoulder stock for it? I would prefer to buy in country, but if i have to, I'll go stateside.

Thenooblord July 9th, 2010 11:22

i only actually have ever used the M93R in semi in games surprisingly, so i could do just as well with a regular M9 or PTP i guess, but I like the looks and the OPTION to go full auto if i really need it
theres not so much a retailer for them in canada as somebody that just happens to have a few mags, but I ordered from ehobby, it was cheaper

lordnordeth July 9th, 2010 11:30

Cool, thanks for the tip.

Pliskin July 9th, 2010 11:32

I'm not sure why but I've always loved the M93R's. Does the KWA have the full auto option? Cause IMO thats stupid...

lordnordeth July 9th, 2010 11:38

Yep, it does, and I love it. I actually use it as my backup in place of an MP5 or Skorpion (which is why I asked about the shoulder stock). Some will like the full auto, some won't. I personally do NOT like Glocks, so for a Full Auto backup (which I was looking for) my options were kinda limited, and I didn't want to go with the KWA M11A1. Meh, to each their own. As I said, I love the versatility of it.

Pliskin July 9th, 2010 11:41

Well it's good to hear. I'm talking with an age verifier who passes through my town from time to time...so soon I shall not be deemed as a chairsofter...mwahahaha.

Anyways, looking forward to gaming/picking a few guns up/meeting everyone.

Thanks for the answers.

grantmac July 9th, 2010 16:52

If you've only ever gamed with CT crapsoft then you may find you are more outgunned then you would like using just a pistol.
Pretty much 90% of all hits in airsoft are made from a flanking/covert position, at least when played outdoors.
The guns just don't have the range compared to how far off you can identify the enemy.

Pistols can be a lot of fun, but you really have to know when to hold fire which is basically any time the other player can see you. This is fairly true of all airsoft weapons, just more-so for pistols.

I know you said GBB... but if you want a pistol that will really piss of people on the other team pick up a TM NBB mk23. With the silencer on that thing they are so whisper quiet. Got a guy out here that plays with just pistols, he carries on the field a mk23, a Glock AEP, and more often than not my hicappa dragon as a back up to a back up.

but that MK23... I HATE THAT THING. *wap....* wtf where did that come from? BTW prob one of the only guns in airsoft where the silencer does something. And it being NBB no moving parts... meaning less maintenance = more reliability and you can generally play in cooler climates.

btw just as an add in, I do play with my mac11 often as my main arm. its def a wait until they are close gun. In fact this last day out I had two people creeping up on me, I fired at one and apparently the gun is loud... it startled the other player and he had a knee jerk reaction to just call him self out too lol. 2 kills that were 60 degree apart with 3 rounds.... I am just that amazing.

No moving part also means most efficient use of gas which results in higher fps.

I have mine setup without the silencer. Loaned it to Zeon for a game last month and I swear I couldn't recognize it when he fired it in the woods. Sounded like a rs bolt action.

Blitzed July 9th, 2010 23:34

Im thinking of doing that with my meister glock 17. Already got 3 mags, i figure why not just keep my mp5 with one hi cap just incase, toss it on my back, load up my rip with like 8 plus glock mags?
