First Airsoft: DPMS A17, M4 & Some Questions

Hey guys,

First of all, what an amazing community here! I understand airsoft isn't legal, but isn't quite illegal either, so it's fantastic there's this huge community where people interested can ask other people 'in the know'.

Now, this might sound a little strange, but bear with me if you could. I'm looking for a beginner's M4, but I care not about shooting BB's...*at all*. I think it's neat, yeah, but I appreciate just the aesthetics of the model itself.

So what I'm looking for is:
  • Something that resembles the weight, size and appearance as much as possible, but also is clear with an orange tip
  • Has other knobs and levers on the weapon (such as safety, magazine release, etc.)
  • Maybe something that doesn't cost a whole lot
  • And again, characteristics geared towards shooting BB's (ie. FPS, accuracy) are not important, though considered a bonus!
So a glorified toy, somewhat. I've found a DPMS A17 M4 Carbine here at http://airgunsource.com for $99.98 CAD. Looking at some YouTube clips of this thing, it seems to fit the bill.
http://www.businessvision.net/edge/S...s/17926WEB.JPG
So a few questions:
  1. Is that an OK website to get this gun at? As in, no issues with shipping or Canadian laws, as far as anyone knows?
  2. I've heard the term 'crapsoft'. I think this is one of those, seeing as it's clear, with the orange tip and all?
  3. I've been reading the 'newbie' forums here, and it's still somewhat unclear to me. http://007airsoft.com has items which state, "All items sold on this website conform to Canadian regulations and laws. You must be 18+ years old to buy an Airsoft gun". But the guns themselves are not clear, with an orange tip (which I believe is an American thing). If that doesn't matter, why even have these clear/orange tipped airsoft guns?
I'm interested in safety above all. I want to make sure that whatever AEG I get is plastic with an orange tip to ensure it's not mistaken for a real firearm. But I also understand my actions and how I use this AEG matters most to safety and potential misunderstanding.

Thanks for all your guys' help, and keep up the awesome work here!

Before people start flaming you

They will tell you to look up reviews on the gun as a lot of people tend to get annoyed when people ask about "How a gun is" or "Should I buy this one". Check the review section on this gun, Youtube videos don't help other than show how it works

Now if you are not here to play and just collect then getting any crapsoft and spray painting should be good since you don't care about shooting it

And somewhere in that long line of FAQ and Noob section

Says any exchange of Airsoft in Canada is pretty much guaranteed you will get it, as for anything out of Canada then you cannot

I don't see the problem with importing this as it's a clear bodied gun. You could get a Customs agent having a bad day but you should be able to win an appeal.

Very VERY few people on this forum game with these types of clear guns. Maybe some of the older members with kids might be able to help you out with the reviews.

If you want a superior grade clear gun try Classic Army Sportline with Clear body. They are upwards upgradeable.

Its a complete utter piece of crap for my standards. But I guess what is crap to one person may not be crap to a another. Where do your crap standards stand? Are you ok with crap?

I know nothing of the retailer nor do I care to research them as they are primarily an airgun retailer that just happens to carry welfare soft guns.
Your money, do with it as you wish.

Orange tips have no legal bearing in Canada, it's an American thing.

Here is a friendly answer to your 3 questions:

1. No idea about the website, but the product you are looking to purchase conforms to policies set by the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency), to the best of our knowledge. Policies can change, and are subject to interpretation by the officer inspecting the package.

2. Yes, it's a low-quality product by our gaming standards. If this is a display piece, go nuts, you don't need it to perform well.

3. 007 is taking a new direction in the near future, and their website is fairly outdated. Also, the CBSA does not set law, only internal policies, and they are responsible for protecting the country from possible threats coming in from outside the border. items sold on 007 are already in-country, and therefore do not break the CBSA's policies. As for why even having clear/orange-tipped guns? Because Walmart, Canadian Tire, Cabella's, etc... need to sell something to underage kids to shoot each other with. And paintball doesn't cut it anymore, I guess.

On a side note - with Halloween coming up in the next few months, it's my responsibility as a serious airsofter to inform you to please do not use this as a component of a costume. Especially if you intend on painting it, law enforcement cannot tell the difference from a distance, and you risk serious injury and firearms-related charges if you brandish an airsoft gun in public.

But then again, it's also called "natural selection".

:D

Thanks for all the responses, especially 808, very much appreciated!

As mentioned, I'd just really like a nice display piece that works (working knobs and so forth). I'd prefer something cheaper, but am very flexible. For example, Azathoth, your suggestion is noted. Checkin' the gun here, it looks amazing.

Know a link where I can get that easily within Canada at an OK price? Also, just a side thing, but anyone know where to get a nice Clear-bodied Airsoft USP, preferably USP Compact? Been looking all over for this piece!

CA Sportline for 179.78$ CAD is really a good deal.

Know where I can get it at that price? The link I have is to a European website, do we have anything more local, ie. within the country?

I have heavy doubts that it would make it in. Though, if someone wanted to find out, there's only one sure way. ;)

If you're asking if we have that gun here, no.

I can vouch for airgunsource, they're good to deal with, and are trustworthy.

The CA is much more worth it, but if you can't get one, then the $99 one from within Canada will fit your needs.

Oh and welcome to AirsoftCanada.

Thanks a bunch, guys. If I'm going to have trouble getting the CA into Canada, I'd rather avoid all that, this being my first real Airsoft. Thanks a bunch for vouching for airgunsource, ancorp, that was also one of my concerns. Going to definitely go for it.

I'll let you all know how this goes. Thanks again for the warm welcome.
