Mine also presses it completely down and I have correct operation, so that might not be your issue.
Can you test your setup with your upper receiver removed while looking down into the space between your lower and the gearbox to ensure the selector plate goes into the auto position properly?
What gearbox and receiver are you using? And post a pic of your selector plate (installed on the gearbox if possible).
