Other than the ambi controls, it's really not that hard to open.
I know VFC used to have "self-centering" gears. Basically a thrust bearing with a spring.
If that is jammed or misaligned, it will cause excessive resistance and might slow down the gun.
I have test-fired my M4 today to make sure, and yes, it's basically the same sound and speed. I chronied it at 16rps.
