A 7.2V battery may or may not turn over the gun. If it does, it will run slower and die faster than an 8.4V battery. It however won't damage anything.
A cheap charger will probably work. You'll save money in the long run by investing in a good (~$100) charger, because your batteries will last longer and give you better performance.
