I think people get intimidated by looking at the various sites..

yeah you can spend A LOT of money

but you have to consider what you want..

Do you want a

20 yard kit- looks like what is represents from 20 yards- playable in an airsoft game

a 10 foot Kit - looks right at 10 feet - usable for a living history event

or a touch kit - looks feels and smells like what it represents - usable for a Museum demonstration.

You can start with a 20 yard kit for very low cost.. and up the resolution of your impression over time..

I started with nothing more than a Modern flectarn smock and a belt rig.. which passes for German gear at 20 yards

Now I'd say I have resolved my kit down to 10 feet.

With a few key purchases, one can have a very reasonable kit in no time. Smock, M43 cap, Trousers, and some pouches and a guy is set. A lot of post war eastern European webbing can be found for cheap and looks the part easily.

Brian is right. You do not need a hyper accurate impression to start. Pick a unit, and start basing your impression from there. Build your impression to the level you want to take it to. There is no need to have every little bit of gear.

You do not need to be a member of one of the reenacting units to attend either, or to build an impression.

Also you can always think outside of the box. What about that lone RAF Pilot stumbling around the battlefield. OR The Armoured Corp Troop Commander who got lost on the way back from the O Group.

Just look at the historical pictures. Visit a couple of thrift stores, a single coloured collared shirt, casual pants, vest, and the optional leather coat would be all the clothes you need.

As for belt kit, well that is totally up to you. You could consider you have nicked the odd bit of kit, a British Small Pack, German belt with an MP 40 mag pouch and canteen.

And for weapons, most likely you would have a rifle, and in some cases an SMG.

Just keep one thing in mind, when going for a Partizan look, less is more.

Only your first set of kit is REALLY expensive, as long as you are sticking to one group. Say German or American. After that your second impression becomes cheaper, and third even cheaper. I started with a 44 American Airborne. It was expensive, but when I decided to do a 45 Airborne it only needed a new set of BDUs. Then when I decided to do a Ranger kit I already had half the stuff. Then I wanted a Marine kit, at this point again all I needed was a set of Marine HBTs. But dear god did I spend a lot on my first kit.

Because putting together impressions is fun (for me anyway).

I have a Maquisard impression that I'd love to use one day.

• Brown wool collarless shirt
• Reproduction French WW1 Breeches (the ones without the stripe down the side)
• Reproduction WW1 British white suspenders
• Brown 11.5" Beret (no leather piping, no patches)
• WW1 Adrian Helmet (Reproduction)
• M1904 Marching shoe (reproduction-looks like a turn of the century boot)
• High neck wool sweater (Captain Highliner style)

For a weapon I would use my Sten AEG.

Edit: if the game requires you to look "innocent" at times avoid wearing helmets, period allied uniforms or gear such as MP40 pouches lol.

Value Village/Talize/Sally Army are a boon for older looking clothes. If you luck out, even some of the old hats and woolen caps make it in there. Only trouble is you have to keep making regular pit stops, but it's not too much of a pain if you're definitely looking.

That was my point. After I did my first Airborne kit it cost me $100 to do a late war Airborne. Then when I wanted Ranger stuff the only kit I needed was a haversack, and of course a fully different uniform down to the service shoes. I went original on some, but if I went all repro I could have done it for $300 or so. Then with the Marine kit, they used either Marine specific stuff(canteen carriers, field dressing pouches etc) or regular army stuff, so again all I needed was the HBTs and a helmet cover. The service shoes for my Ranger kit are the rough outs, which are the same as boondockers except the tread is different. Nobody makes a really good repro boondocker so the rough outs are good enough. My point was that the expensive part of getting a kit together is the actual webbing, which often goes across different units. Like the pistol belt, M1 ammo belt, and BAR belts I have can be used for Airborne, Ranger or Marine for example.

Okay! I've read all kinds of threads discussing the different brands of Colt 1911's. The TM Colt 1911A1 looks like a good fit for me but I haven't been able to find a Canadian retailer who sells it so I have no idea whether it's in my price range. Is it available in Canada?

I see they usually run anywhere from $300-400 give or take depending on the package, one just popped up in the classifieds as well

They come and go, off and on.
