Older web gear/ good or bad

I just had A good friend of mine who is exmilitary give me most of his old web gear. He served from around 1958 to 1978. I believe he said it is M51 issue? It is in excellent condition. My question is that since I see most of the guys on this forum in newer rig (ie vests) would using the older style still fit in with most of the themes that get played. I was looking at vest's at the local army surplus but this sort of came along before I spent the coin. If this will work for now down the road I'll get more modern rig.

Use whatever works. I would try it first before you try a "modern" vest. I like the old style webbing, its a lot more free compared to constricting new vests. Certain things work better for certain play styles.

Thanks Tank. It is much along the lines of WWII gear but in OD. The mag pouches will actually fit my AK mags which is a bounus.

The mess kit pouch on the old CF webbing is great for mags. I think you can fit about 5 or 6 M series mags in it. You can fit 2 mags in each of the mag pouches which is one step up from the new issued vest.

In terms of mobility...webbing is a good choice. Just make sure to rig it properly or it will wrap around your body and annoy the shit out of you. As far as modular setup, you don't have much room to work with and you can't fully customize your rig as you could with a MOLLE platform. In the end, gear is all dependant on the user.

I was wondering about adding on to it but how much do I really need to carry. The stock mag pouches are made to attach to just your belt as well as the web gear so I figured if more ammo load out was needed that would work. My buddy kept a few pieces for old times sake and the mess kit was one of them but I can watch for another one of those. Also got the big CF rain coat, he says you snap two together and you can make a small tent. Hey free is always good right.

I'm still rocking gear from the 60's. It works fine.

Webbing is fine, it's what I started with, just make sure it's adjusted to be comfortable or you won't enjoy your self because you are uncomfortable. I think a lot of people go out and drag way too much stuff around.

Post up a pic. The70-80s stuff was a bit of a mess, the stuff that came later was a lot nicer. Thicker belt and suspenders so they'd stay in place and spread the load better plus hooks and velcro to hold it together so it wouldn't fall apart when you went to ground.

Lots of real deal guys still use it for patrol type actions.

The Brits still use webbing, and same for some Canuck infantry. I know when I was in Shilo, the snipers could get a set of P82 webbing added to their docs.

Personally I've used the CF P82, the Brit S90 and S95 and they've all kicked ass. The Brit P58 is also a very nice set of kit if you're using either an FAL or M16.

The CS95 PLCE is great webbing. The only consideration is weighting it right so you dont get burns or flopping. Basically too heavy it rubs and you need a extra pad called a hippo to keep you happy. Too light (definitely an issue with airsoft mags) and it'll bounce. To stop the bounce you can add bungees to tighten up the pouches to each other and maybe add a couple of full water bottles. To be honest most guys get issued the CS95 PLCE but eventually purchase vests or south african webbing.

I use an old CF webbing under my ghillie suit.

My main gripe about them is the pouches closure. It's a little thing that goes into a plastic square ring. It require 2 hands, 2 eyes and some time to close. When I a hurry, it get on my nerves real fast.

But the rig itself is confortable, rugged and practical. Not high speed low drag like velcro molle pouches, but for the price, it work.
