Ares ms338 & ares ms700!

Hey guys I'm not exactly new to Airsoft but I mean in terms of buying guns and stuff I haven't found a good site to. I got my gun for a decent price but I was looking at this gun and it looks really nice (either as a wall hanger or just to play around with it) I have done my reviews and whatnot and all the problems here don't bother me that much. But yeah I am located in Canada and just wondering if anyone knows a cheap place I can get this shipped to my town (Vancouver). Because haven't found any online site with it an well local stores are selling them at a stupidly high price. But yeah thanks for reading this and I hope it doesn't anger anyone lol.

I've seen many posts regarding the ARES MSR and thought i'd share my story.

I picked up an MS700 in a swap. The rifle was fine, no slam firing issues. The fps was 380 on a 0.2g bb so this led me to start thinking about upgrading. I run ASPUk so i'm pretty clued up on spring sniper rifles.

When taking the rifle apart there was a few things i noticed.

The cocking lever is crimped into place at then end of the cylinder rather than using pins like the TM VSR and JG clone. Although the cylinder material appears to be of strong aluminium i don't see the cocking lever staying in place for long when using a high tensile spring. Fortunately VSR after market cylinder will fit as a replacement.

I tried fitting a Laylax pink neo 45 degree piston but the white slip rings were too wide to fit in the stock cylinder. I tried both ASPUK 45 degree and 90 degree pistons and these fit fine.

The cylinder head is VSR compatible but i've stuck with stock one for now.

The hop unit is unique itself but you can use VSR hop buckings.

The barrel is 420mm in length and made of brass. You can use longer VSR aftermarket barrels as they pass nicely into the flash hider.

The stock piston is made of plastic as is the spring guide. The Trigger system is unique as are the sears which are made of pot metal.

At first I replaced the piston for an ASPUK aluminium version, steel spring guide and M150 spring along with a DeepFire 6.02mm 430mm VSR barrel but left the stock trigger in place.

I managed to skirmish for the best part of a day before it started slam firing. I removed the piston to notice very little wear on it. The sear however did show some sign of wear but not at the tip. There was a noticeable indentation halfway up the front of the sears surface.

As a test, i replaced the piston yet again. The rifle worked fine for about 30 shots and then started to slam fire again.

If you notice the top of the mag is spring loaded which potentially could leave room for a VSR trigger to be installed. You just need to drill a hole for the front trigger screw.

So, i then started looking at other triggers.

The Laylax and ASPUK triggers didn't fit. However i did manage to install a VSR trigger with steel sears and this worked.... until i placed the received back into the body of the rifle.

The actually trigger is too short, this means that when the receiver is placed in the body of the rifle only approx 1.5/2cm of the lower tip of the trigger is showing and is not able to be pulled.

Back to the drawing board.

You could Dremel the sear to make a 45 degree sear and change the piston with a 90 degree catch but as the sear is made of pot metal i'm not sure how long it would last. This does work though.

Not to be defeated TNT have just released a trigger for the MSR and I can confirm that it does work!!!!!!!!!

I'm now running a Marksman Craft 90 Zero Trigger, ASPUK piston with 90 Degree Steel catch, ASPUK Steel Spring Guide, ASPUK M170 Spring, Deepfire 6.03mm x 430mm tightbore barrel along with the stock hop bucking. FPS currently 530 with 0.2g

If you want stop your MS338 or MS700, try to fit this sear in . I have this one in my M28 which is partly VSR10, and it has not slam fire once.

You may need modify the Ares, then again, I don't think anyone is going to make upgrades for it. Even if you get one from Ares, it will be pot metal.

Wow I have not looked at this thread in forever, but am glad I did. You guys have done some serious indepth reviews and skirmishes to find all the parts that work to make this gun fully functioning like it should be. I feel that I should buy it now and just take the advice. I will compile a list of upgrade parts I need as well. Anyway, would it be recomended to buy the aftermarket parts like the trigger from a site or get the stock ones CNC'ed which I can probably do.

Just bought the MS338 off Redwolf Airsoft and honestly after reading this thread and many others the answer to all the problems with this gun is to get a Marksmen Craft Pro Trigger and replace the entire bolt assembly except for the handle. Really simple fixes actually.

Yeah the MS338 as a longer tigger and the M40A5 is closer to a vsr trigger.

I am pretty sure, both the MS338 and MS700 uses the same shorty trigger group housing and not the longer one that you see on a VSR10. But if it fits, yeah!

I'll just clarify as people do seem to get confused...

The MSR slam fires due to two reasons. The first is that the piston is made of plastic. When used with even the stock sears the plastic piston catch wear down and stops catching the sear.

The second issue is the piston sear itself. It is made of the worst metal i've ever seen used for a sear. Worse than the JG Bar10. It wears quickly even with the stock piston.

So with both the stock piston sear and piston, they wear each other out and cause slam firing. If you replace one part it might resolve the issue for a few mags but the slam firing will return. You must replace both.

However that's where the problem lies. At present, there's no readily, widely available replacement piston sear for the stock trigger. So even if you use the Ares upgrade cylinder set, it will still fail because the piston sear hasn't been replaced.

I have many happy customers and i too have upgraded and use in my own MSR the following parts. fyi i'm not suggesting you buy from us, buy from wherever you like but this will help you identify the parts required:

This setup will get you around 540 fps so you may need to clip the spring depending on your site limit.

Other parts are VSR compatible such as the hop bucking, cylinder and cylinder head. How do i know this, because i use them in my own MSR

I installed my MMC Pro trigger. It took a ton of work though. More than it should have. When i first screwed it in the sear didn't even catch on the piston. So I filed down the receiver a bunch and then it started to catch but then started slam firing. After filling down the receiver some more and hammering the trigger down lightly it finally worked. I'm pretty sure I'm shooting around 550-600 FPS now. So overall it's a great gun but you have to put a lot of time and money into it.

Hey Mike,

Did you use the piston supplied with the trigger or did you use another?

I ask because i've upgraded a few now and always use the ASPUK piston (link in above post) which has never failed.

I'm wondering if the piston supplied with the trigger has those two white slip wings too wide. This would make the piston sit a bit higher in the cylinder. Just a theory.
