Because the s*** has really hit the fan. Most military/contractor guys setup their gear in what called "lines" so that they can shed lines as the situation requires. Your LBV/Chestrig is generally on a seperate line from your pistol (and the necessities to life such as a compass and map, knife, lighter etc...) because if things change in the field as they always will, like for example, a)you need to get in a super tight crawl space or b)you used up all your ammo or c)your gun takes a shot to the magwell rendering it useless or d)anything crazy happens that makes that line redundant, then you can ditch it and retain a higher level of mobility to compensate for the lack of your primary weapon.
