If you DO go with the M4 get the TM M4 S-System, it's infinitely more solid than the regular TM M4A1. Zero barrel wobble on the S-System because the rail reinforces everything, the gun is nearly bomb proof except the tabs and plastic stock.

The JG M4 S-system is a great gun too but you might wanna take her down right away and re-lube/re-shim the gears. They tend to do a lame job at the factory. After thet they shoot hard at 370-400FPS and they come with Classic Army hardened steel gears in a TM clone gearbox and they are VERY heavy/solid.

If you wanna go AK there really isn't anything wrong with them except that some of them have a loose front sight and some issues with the screws on the stock and fire selector switch coming lose. all easily fixed. You may wanna upgrade the gun too because I know I hate the feel of a light/plastic AK. In wich case it gets expensive, concider building a franken AK if you are familiar with how they are assembled. check my thread "Better AK than TM for less than $600" under the same area as this post.

any one of these 3 is a great choice for a first gun. Even the JG if you know someone that wants to work on the gearbox for an hour for you.

This is all subjective, but I like the way an AK47 feels and handles much better then an M4/M16. I recently bought a TM AK47 and am going to be upgrading the internals and the externals.

+1

Grab a Kraken + metal body + wood kit. For $400ish you can get a pretty nice gun.

yea, thats what i might do, but is it something that somebody who is new to airsoft and knows absolutely nothing about the mechanics of the guns can do? I know very little about how an airsoft gun works (im reading stuff 'bout them every day). Is it complicated?

Not really, mate. Disassembling an AK is quite easy, take a look at the videos that www.mechbox.com has. They have videos on how to take down all the popular AEG models, and their Gearboxes.

I should add that I experienced no barrel wobble on my TM M4A1. It was a little wobbly when I first got it. Turned out the lug that attached the barrel to the body wasn't tightened completely. Once I tightened that, no problems whatsoever.

the type of play you plan on doing should figure into it too i think,, if you are going to be playing alot of cqb you wont want a really long rifle like an m16a1,, the ak shold be ok for that,, but if you are going to be mostly outdoors the m16a1 shouldnt be a problem.

mostly find a gun you like then try to find the most reliable brand that makes it.

On the note of the A1 series, I find any armalite is easier to use in the field then an AK (dont get me wrong I LOVE the AK) because the magazines are just too damn long. If you're like me you spend a majority of the game on your belly crawling around trying not to get shot, and for that purpose the armalite with a 20rnd VN style mag is perfect. You can rest the pistol grip on the ground and still take aimed shots (where with an AK this is a difficult task) and it just generally is easier to manuever in these low positions. However like several others have mentioned, the AK can take a shit-kicking, its batteries last forever, and with a hicap you're basically a walking ammo factory. To each his own I guess.

Actually, the OP asked about an M4A1, not an M16. The M4 is pretty versatile in that sense. Great for medium range outdoor use, but also nice and compact for CQB.
