During the sumer when I was testing it,runs great in the
hot weather.
Your problem is that you're using Ni-MH batteries in cold weather. Cold and Nickel Metal Hydride is a bad combination. That chemistry hates cold.

Switch to Ni-Cad and your battery life will increase drastically.

Hmm... never seen that capacity before. Have you tried Sanyo cells? I use to exclusively run 8.4v 2400mAh Sanyo Ni-Cad packs in the winter on 400fps setups with no problems. One pack would last me the whole day. I also had Systema Torque up gears installed.

Regarding RoF dropping in general...

Another (better, I think) way to do it is electronically with electronic speed control of the motor.

Disclaimer: Naturally you need a computer controller for the motor, which I just happen to be pimping in the For Sale (Accessories and Upgrades) section (The Trigger Master).

Here is a video demo of really extreme RoF lowering (50%)

When you do it electronically your battery capacity, etc is not fudged with and you're not changing gears or anything. You'll wind up with more consistent performance that lasts longer. In that video, the battery is NOT nearly dead -- the motor it actually physically just running slower.
