1970's style M16

New receiver - A1 (upper if you just want the look - lower if you also want the Colt markings). M203 grenade launchers were starting to be used in the early 70's (late 'Nam). And yes, the heatshield is separate from the launcher. Other than that, the A2 was adopted in early-mid 1980's (correct me if I'm wrong) so if you want a 1970's look, that won't work.

Someone up there said "three-prong flash hider". That was used on the first M16 and in the XM16E1. By the 1970's, both were phased out (although the XM could still see some use). The M16A1 was adopted in the late '60's (around 1968) and it had the birdcage flash hider.

So yeah, if you want only the frontend just buy the M203 with the heatshield and you're all set.

I started with the same gun (CA M15A4) and bought a CA M203 Long barrel mounted grenade launcher from Xtreme Tactics. I had troubles finding the mount kit for it. Make sure you get the right one. The M15 Carbine has a different mount kit. It will say in the box when you buy the launcher what the part number is for the one you need. I bought mine from Wolf Armouries. For the Upper Handguard I bought a G&P from Ehobby Asia on Ebay. It cost me $20 or something Like that. I had to file down the front of it a bit to get it too fit (it was too long) and It's still a TIGHT fit. But when all is said and done... It's still one sexay beast! Definatly though for the 70's get the A1 receiver
