Hm I hadn't thought about that sort of for a hop-up. Thanks. And yeah... I have no freaking clue how that dirt got in there.

HKGhost took a look at it before it really broke down and told me there was something potentially jamming the ARL. I spoke with him again and he elaborated by saying the lower shell was bent just enough to force the ARL onto the bevel gear. Would this have the effects on my gun like I've been describing?
