for a cheap first gun, Velocity arms custom line is the way to go, If your willing to spend the extra bit then finding an all black and/or metal gun on the classifieds is even better. I suggest waiting to see what you find in the classifieds and then buying a velocity arms custom if you don't see anything really worth it (in your eyes at least). Welcome to ASC I hope you grow into a good contributing member.

No, they are mags, pus posted the pic that explains which is which.

From searching the net, "Mags" is the proper term.

Ive always called them Mags, until my friends called them clips and I was like "Err.. Okay."

Mags = Magazine
Clips = ....Clips?

EDIT: From wikipedia and http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FirearmsGlossary/

Quote:
The detachable magazine is often referred to as a clip; the correctness of this usage has been the subject of debate for most of a century.[1][2]

Very well, it makes sense also. I will do my best to correct myself before submitting anything with clips in it in the future

The term "clips" came from teenagers and videogames :P

clips are ammo containing mechanisms used to load detachable magazines and internal magazines. Only gun that loads by inserting a clip is the Garand. all others are internal mags or detachable.

A clip feeds ammo into an internal magazine in the gun

its outright wrong. Clips are what hold the bullets in strips before they are inserted into a magazine. The thing that goes into your rifle/gun isn't a clip.

Haha don't worry, it happens to everyone

Yeah I'll try to remember it but old habits (even wrong habits) die hard.

Way to forget about the mauser, springfield and the mosin nagat. They have a permanent mag, Garand is not the only one.

For me talking in a regular conversation mags and clips are interchangeable however I make a conscious effort to say mags or clips when speaking in certain situations (eg. Gun shows, or people who actually know things about guns and would look down on me if I were to say clip when I was referring to a mag).

OP: Clips are usually strips of metal or whatever that hold a bunch of bullets such as on #4 Lee Enfields or the 1903 Springfield (and revolvers too, they use "clips" that force all the bullets into the chamber at once rather than having to hand load each bullet one by one). There is a video of a guy on youtube who speedshoots a revolver, when he reloads he uses these revolver clips. YouTube - Fast Revolver Shooting that's the video.

They're disposable and just a piece of metal, the bullets are "open" and not contained within the magazine itself.

Mags on the other hand (eg. STANAG mags used in the M4/16) or pretty much any modern firearm use mags, they're encased in a "magazine".

Note: I'm not a gun enthusiast, I do know a little bit about them so the above might not be entirely accurate however that's the general idea and basically what I use to define a clip or a mag.

Yeah I think I get it now, the clip would be used to keep the ammo together until it is introduced into the magazine (whether the magazine is permanently attached to the gun or removable like a pistol or some rifles).

Only for rifles and revolvers. The only thing more confusing than that is Restricted firearms in Canada.

Whats confusing about Restricted class firearms? There are comprehensive lists stating which gun is classed under what category. If theres a gun not under a category it means its a new gun on the market and has yet to be classified, but a call to the CFC or RCMP can clarify that up for you.

I keep confusing mm with cm, and I also keep forgetting the double and single action part.
