Debt is enslavement. Anyone who tells you otherwise is offering you credit.

Hence why I avoid it.

Look at the state of the economy. That is 100% because of bad dept management. I do not want that option. I spend what I have and no more.

I suppose he could have said credit is important rather than debt. But then how does one get credit without a little debt. Albeit, when I use my credit card, I pay it off on time and in full. Without that, I would never have been able to buy my house. Unless you can pay cash for it. lol Unlikely but possible.

Isn't it a bit suspicious though when you offer to buy a house and give the bank a few briefcases of non sequential $20, $50, or $100 bills?

Also debt is important but you have to be smart about it. A house is an investment, sure you could rent for less but at the same time with a house you're building equity to be able to borrow against later (if needed).

Contrary to drake I see debt as an important and needed part of the economy, you just have to be smart about it. If you look at America, it's because they were too stupid to realize that they weren't borrowing properly and now someone somewhere (probably in Japan, or China (old but still good info)) is laughing all the way to the bank.

I'd venture to say going into debt by taking out a loan for a house is TOTALLY different than having debt because you spend too much on what you cannot afford. It's obvious that 95% of the population pretty much anywhere cannot pay for a house in full, cash or however it may be, but when you go out and buy things just for the heck of it or because you can, and you don't have the money for it? Stupid. Sure credit cards are a good thing, but only if you use them appropriately, and only spend what you know you can pay off right away, or else it will start piling up.

This is just my opinion, and what my dad has taught me on how to control my spending and learning to save.

Actually, like any investment, you have to make sure you only invest in a property that you can afford if the interest rates increase. Getting a 0 down mortgage because you can't afford a down payment is the one way to lose your house when prime shoots up a few percentage points. You need contingency plans if things go south, not "I want to buy a house because it's cheaper than rent but I have no money saved".
