Not exactly what I had in mind. I was thinking along the lines of moving the piston with magnetic coils or alternately, a bb Gauss gun. It's not a new concept, I think many have thought about it but only to run into problems with efficiency.

The low shot count is a good point, but the question is how many? I wouldn't mind if it was as low as 300 shots through one tank if it was quick enough to swap and the tank would be cheap enough to buy 3-4 of them.

I see lithium batteries at 1100 mah taking up the same space as 18650 size batteries of the same diameter that are 3400mah.

Why aren't we getting these monster runtime batteries. Sanyo, AW, Panasonic and other quality lithium manufacturers have been making decent batteries for years. If had 1900mah or better in my flashlights since 2010

There are butane nail guns that works just like this. Shouldn't be to hard to adapt the system to an Airsoft platform
(I am almost tempted on getting one of those nail guns and give it a try myself :P)

Yeah now that you mention it, I heard about some prototype or paintball gun (can't recall) using that but apparently wasn't a viable solution because if I don't remember what

No they were discontinued long ago. The guns were prone to heating up a lot when they've been fired rapidly. As it turns out, heating a bottle of compressed propane is a bad idea. A number of test guns exploded because of this

Tapping GBBR mags to use an external HPA source isn't terribly expensive compared to the cost of the GBBR, mags, HPA tank, regulator, etc. I don't think that's what you had in mind, but unfortunately gas-in-mag style setups using HPA are utterly infeasible, as air does not liquify like propane at pressures that are safe and managable for airsoft purposes. Unless you can find a way to cheat thermodynamics and liquify air at much lower-than usual pressure, without also having to chill your mags to well below freezing, HPA systems require an external tank with a regulator.

While I do think it'd be entertaining to see someone hauling all their mags around in a Dewar flask, not so fun to see them risk an explosion whenever they leave a half filled mag to heat up to SATP.

EDIT Something much more promising: I used to do air pistol target shooting, my friend's Morini used a small under-barrel cylinder which could fit in a full stocked gun (though I doubt you could fit it in a buffer tube). You fill it by hand using (essentially) a fancy bicycle pump. They're good for 200 shots at roughly 3.6J/shot (5 grains at 495feet/s). assuming we're firing at 1J/shot that gets us roughly 720 shots. They're damn expensive though.

Paslode cordless framing nailers rely on a combustion to fire and they are safe, a three inch nail takes a lot more jamb than a bb does.

The technology is out there, the usefulness or budget to harness it isn't.
Lucky to fire a nail every two seconds with the Paslode, so that would limit it to replacing sniper rifles, then the resources and sales to bring the cost down to an acceptable level. Well I'm guessing there's more gas framing nailers than there are airsoft snipers

The solenoid alternative has just as long a wait before being able to fire.


I dare to hope that the next innovation will be in barrels, tight bore and miracle barrels are good, but what if the inside of the barrel was tight, shaped innovative and polished so smooth that it had near zero drag on the bb.

Well well! If it fits in a full stock its not bad either. I guess its physically possible then.

Problem with tightbores/widebores right now isnt quality or bore or length or whatever. Problem is fouling from the gun.
