cheap bomb prop
a little while back one of our local players showed up to a game with a new prop, to add to our fun.it was a bomb complete with count down warning and all.there were two problems that i recall, and one he was working on fixing.
1)the count down could only be set for about 5.45 and that was as high as it would go.at .45 the beeping would speed up and when it reached 0 it would flat line.thus having exploded. 2)the second problem was that while the beeping was constant it wasn't very loud,if you were more than 10 feet away then you didn't hear it at all. now i liked his setup and i know i wouldn't be able to make one that worked half as well, but i had this idea: when at the dollar store i found a kitchen timer and a door/window alarm and was wondering if they couldn't be combined to make a more adjustable bomb? the timer would give better input for the time (up to an hour)and seconds.' using the alarm would give a much louder "explosion" at the end,but no beeping to tell people where it is prior to detonation.(unfortunately). the problem is i have little or no understanding of electronics/wiring.the switch for the alarm is magnetic so when separated the alarm sounds. to my mind what would have to be done would be to wire the timers sound wires into the alarm, so when the timer hit 0 the alarm would sound.and the alarm would have to be set to go off when the timer says to,like"hey the magnet moved sound off!" after this you would only have to mount it to a suitable frame to suit your preferences, either a pipe or a briefcase or a block of plumbers putty to simulate c4.whatever you like. so what i am asking for is someone to try it out and see if it can be done.perhaps (among all the players ) there is a electronics's person who could say if the idea is worth trying or not. my idea+ your knowledge=cool game prop!! Is a useful prop, you'd be better off using a personal alarm with the pull ring though, is louder at 110dB. A few years ago I set out to build this circuit, and was working out some bugs, then ran out of time and forgot about it. I removed the speaker from the timer, and used that to trigger a transistor to switch the battery leads on the alarm, worked well. The timer itself switches the ground side of the speaker, so that's something you'll have to sort out as far as activating the transistor to do the switching though.
My design was basically set the timer, pull the pin to arm it, then let it do it's thing. The personal alarm works well as a trip wire too. Last edited by CDN_Stalker; August 26th, 2009 at 17:24.. |

thanks cnd_stalker,i was starting to fear that i would get no responses at all,not sure i understand all you said but i will talk to my friends and see if they can help me understand it better.
i know my idea is not new or anything i was just trying to make MY idea work, thanks for the impute cnd_stalker,if you can think of anything else feel free to post,i am always interested in cheap game props. after all why spend lots of money on stuff you will probably break anyway?? Quinman

Nushell, you attach the negative side of the alarm's battery to the correct side of the transitor (simplicity, a transistor is a basic electronic component, consists of three sides, won't get into details right now, but when you apply a small voltage to the middle part of a transistor, it allows electricity to flow from one side of the transistor to the other, aka it acts as an off/on switch), the timer's speaker wire to the middle, and the other side of the transistor to the wire on the alarm that the ground side of the battery used to go to. Basically, you cut the battery ground wire in two, and place the transistor in between. I won't get into the other parts of the circuit, I barely remember it all, I did add other components, but if you don't understand electronics, I'll keep it as simple as possible about how to get it to work. BTW, for your electronics friends, I went with a PNP (Positive/Negative/Positive) transistor to deal with the timer switching the ground side of the speaker.
