Viva Sten - quick tech notes

Backspasm passed me his Sten (Viva) after Z's FR game. It wasn't feeding properly.

The end result was that the plastic follower in the mag that pushes the BB's out of the mag broke, was fed up into the gun and ended up partially shot down down his barrel where it lodge/stuck.

Aside from a down mag (the follower doesn't look like any other I've seen...so I don't know if you can rig a replacement piece). I've got some scrap plastic and will see if I can't resurrect his mag.

In addition to the mag follower breaking, I suspect that when the follower was rammed past the hopup nub area, it popped the hopup adjustment grub screw out of the hopup.

The hopup unit is plastic and quite flexible. Since the Sten feeds "sideways" the adjustment grub screw is simply threaded into the side of the hopup body. When you rotate the magwell, a hole in the aluminum barrel collar allows access to the hopup grub screw. The threads/fit of the threading between the hopup and the grub screw is not the greatest and I suspect it will vibrate/rattle out. I'd suggest at the least stuffing a wad of cloth/tissue down the adjustment hole to trap the screw in there in case it backs out. A wrap or three of plumbers tape around the threads helps too.

It is a common thread size, but most screws that size have a slightly larger head than the adjustment hole in the aluminum collar. You can either drill out the hole in the collar so the screw can rise/lower as needed...or you can turn down the head of the screw (which is what I did on Ian's gun).

The only other thing that I noted in the quick tear down of the Sten was that the retaining clip/bar/rod is all that holds the mechbox in the body (when in place the hopup holds it from moving forward as well). The rear leg of the pin is long enough to go through the body and the mechbox/trigger block. However, the front "leg" is very short. The front leg/stub of the rod wasn't sprung to positively engage the body. Simply bending it a bit makes it enage much better. The body plate that covers it will hold it, but the small adjustment helps.

I would be very careful not to over tighten any of the screws on this gun...on a couple there isn't much thread engagement.

Neat little shooter! Have fun guys!

Great info Tys... I'm sure all the guys with Stens will be able to benefit from it.
