G&G vs ICS (M16)
Hey everybody, I've narrowed down what I want in a rifle (M16 RIS) to these two guns. I know there is the high end Classic Army and Tokyo Marui but they are harder to find in Canada. I can get the ICS and G&G locally but am torn between the two. Can you guys give some imput as to which one you would go with if you had to choose? Or perhaps suggest another different rifle you would choose and why. I'm still quite new to airsoft so I don't have experience with ICS but I do own a G&G MP5 which has been solid so far.

Are they both full metal? If they are, I'd get the ICS.

Yes both are full metal and around the same price.

ICS is good right out of the box, G&G i have yet to see one function properly for any sustained period. I have only seen the cansoft of G&G though. ICS isn't as easy to upgrade though, not that you really need to do much.

I would go for a king arms or classic army. Or if you have the cash G&P.

ICS M4 has the split gearbox design that makes it very easy to do maintenance like clean and regrease o-ring piston and gears.
(so if you are a maintenance person go ICS no contest) It also allows you to switch the upper gearbox (read "spring") in about 30sec. (with an extra upper gearbox you also switch from inside power say (350fps)to outside power at will without trouble (go see video on you tube)) Plus the ICS hop-up is one of the best unit on the market today adjust once and forget unless you change bb weight (.28g work very well) stick with ICS rubber and bucking Note that if you upgrade your barrel, the ICS barrel has a groove (for an extra o-ring) that upgrade barrel like prometheus don't have (2 turns of 2mm wide electric tape solve that situation) Downside the (body) is specific so you have to use an ICS body but since yours is already metal... I don't see a problem Buffer tube is real steel diameter not Tokyo marui The rest like internals is standart version 2 (piston, cylinder, etc) The only limitation to this AEG is the FPS (around 415 to 425fps max) because of the split gearbox design but again because of actual field limitation not really a problem. This AEG also responds quite well to upper gearbox blueprinting, I never personnally owned a G&G so I'll keep quiet on that one Well there you go... as neutral as I can be! Cheer Mate Ps:Get age verified!

I don't know where you hear that high FPS setups where a problem with the split mechbox...
I ran one at 450 fps for a while, never had issues. Once the rear body pin is in, it's not split nor splitable anymore. Also remember that the Anti-reversal latch is proprietary, same for the trigger block and receivers. Obviously the mechbox shell too. Some parts will need fitting if you want to change them. Read here pistol grips and buffer tubes. All the necessary modifications are easy to find on the web. Some ICS rifles have metric upper receiver threads (TM compatible front). Others have imperial threads (G&P/real-steel/WE compatible). If they are the same price, get the ICS. It will outperform from the box and outlast on the long run. |

On a ICS M4, The two mechbox parts are held together with pins and the torque to the piston is applied off centerline (to the left)... it is the theoretical weak point of the ICS split gearbox, at very high spring level you might eventually develop some ovalization of the pin holes and that will induce uneven wear in the system. But as I've noted most game limit AEG's to < 400fps so... not really a problem is it! I simply said it before someone who never owned an ICS M4 said it without any explanation See you on the 8 @ action Kos-mos Cheers

Thanks for the replies everybody! I was leaning more towards the G&G simply because I already owned one but it seems the ICS might be a better bet from what you guys have been saying. I do like to tinker with my guns but I also want them to be as reliable as possible so ICS looks to be the better choice.
And regarding getting AV'd, I'm actually AV'd on my local forum but not here. Is there someway I can get that transfered to this main forum?

Thanks for the heads up Sportco. BTW...what would happen if you depressed the forward assist with a round in the chamber?

But I have yet to see piston miss alignment or pin hole getting used in an ICS... and I have one of the older 1997 mechboxes... I still don't know what makes you think it works wrong with high power setups... It's basically a V2 with the bullet-proof top of the V3s... Forget that it's splitting, it is not moving at all when latched. So consider that it's exactly as sturdy as a V3, but in a V2-style gun. There is zero mechanical flaw in the ICS design. The only draw back is that it uses some special parts and requires some tinkering to make compatible with other brands.

I own two ICS M4's, note my sig. One of them I bought used and had to open the lower gearbox to fiddle with the yaw control bar and replace the switch assembly, also needed to replace the crane stock because the battery terminals broke off (my fault). The other gun started as a Cansoft, and I eventually replaced the crappy white piston with the super smooth ICS "POM" orange piston set.
I love these guns. Quality is top notch. |
