Until you do something with that battery, wrap the exposed leads with electrical tape to prevent them from accidentally touching each other and shorting the entire pack out. Melted Nickel Metal Hydride all over your bedroom floor isn't exactly the safest known substance on the planet... and neither are the gasses created from the overheating.

Weird, the damage will usually happen at the short location. I don't think you pinched a wire, I think your plug was defective, possibly missing the plastic insulation between the positive/negative leads. The damage on the plug suggest arcing in that area.

Replacing the connection with a Deans plug might address the short, if nothing else was fried in the process.

From my experience as an apprentice electrician, and just saying from what i've learned is(and i'm not saying i'm an expert or know everything); that if it has been done in this order, while screwing in the plate he pinched the wire and AFTER plugged in the battery, the location of the short would be at the connection of the battery and not where the wire was snagged.

But in his case as he explained, he plugged it in, started screwing in the butt plate and smoke started appearing, so it had to be arcing at the connector (look at his pics)

Even I find it odd..

Path of least resistance....... there isn't much metal touching between the pins and sockets compared to the higher current handling wires, so that'd be the weak point for the current to focus on.

I had this happen to a p90 battery of mine. The internals of the plug is defective. It probably arced and smoked the plastic.

i also have the charger that thetr83 has and i've been using it over a year so is probably wasn't the charger that caused this.

It probably wasn't the charger but at the same time you shouldn't charge your batteries with a dumb charger that just pumps amperage into the battery continuously and doesn't trickle charge when it detects "Vdrop".

At least a smartcharger with an LED to tell you when it's done will be good for the battery in the long run if not a fancy B6 with LCD screen.

If he bought the gun at a store, I only know of one store carrying that particular gun in Waterloo Region and it was on consignment for a member of ASC trying to get into the retail market.

I'll have to look into this further to confirm this.

Dump the dumb charger. If the battery and charger came with the gun, you should be covered. If he will refund you for it "and he should", pick up a Classic Army, or King Arms instead. I love the look of Ares, but I've heard nothing good come from them in about four years. There are many threads on ASC about batteries in depth. Almost all battery types have good and bad brands. Do the research to find out what you need for your gun, and buy an appropriate charger. Smart chargers exist for a reason. Not that a wall charger won't work necessarily. But a proper smart charger can extend the life of your battery, and in turn your gun.

Update.

I went to the store today and the staff are quite willing to help.

They said they would contact the rep who gave them the guns and see about a repair.

I did do some research and was reasonably assured that Ares was a good make. Maybe I am wrong about that or maybe it was just a one off thing.

*Update to the update.

The store called me back and they were incredibly helpful. They told me that there is a paintball store in London(about 45mins away) that also sells airsoft and does repairs. They are going to pay for the repair and they suggested that I bring the gun myself so that whoever repairs it can show me how to properly install the battery and run through operation of the gun with me. I for one think this is a great idea for all noobs.
