Genuine Cadpat Colours?
Hi guys,
Hoping maybe some of you guys can help me out. I recently purchased some genuine issue cadpat off ebay (surplus, not illegally). It arrived today and the fading isn't too terrible, especially on the shirt. But what's odd is that the shirt seems much more brown than green. From all the pictures I've seen I thought cadpat was predominately brighter green. The pants fit what I thought cadpat should look like, but the shirt doesn't even really match the pants. It does have the NSN tag, and by all accounts it's genuine issue, pockets slanted, inner "plastic" like liner on the hip pockets, little tab thing on the chest for holding rank insignia, velcro shoulder flashes... Just the colour seems off somehow. I'm thinking maybe specific branches of the military have slightly different camo? Airforce vs Armoured vs General Infantry? Or maybe I got ripped off. Any help would be appreciated.

It can be, but even within the issue material they are 2-3 different tones, as an example, my shirt's inside pocket isn't exactly the same colour (tone?). A Major I saw really often in the past had a different tone shirt/pants. Nothing to worry about.

The USMC's MARPAT has more brown in it than CADPAT but if it's authentic MARPAT it should have all the USMC trademarks and whatnot. Here are some pics:
Which does yours look like? Here is woodlands MARPAT: Here is CADPAT: |

As Nervikaire said, there are variations within the CADPAT family. Remember that there are a couple of different textile mills pumping this stuff out. So slight variations in dye mix, manufacturing process may result in slightly different variations.
This level of textile manufacturing is still relatively new in Canada - before the army commissioned CADPAT the technology to produce a material of this type did not exist in country. I forget which country in particular, but the gov'nt had to purchase equipment from a nordic country in order to produce material of sufficient quality, so perhaps our textile industry is still learning. Reminds me of the NVA uniforms during the 'nam. Cottage industry production meant a wide variation in tones from green to brown, when it was in theory ass supposed to be the same khaki tone... |

Looks like the ***** just showed up^^^. All that info is so full of holes it's scary. And......... best of all, only costs us $1,000,000,000 per year!!! Hehe, let's just say that cadpat is legal to buy when it's been "un-issued" and leave it at that. Same shit, just been worn out and turned in, and sold to the highest bidder by the boxful (Crown Asset Public Auctions.)
I have a cadpat BDU shirt that looks more brown than is greenish, no worries, it works great around cedars (as does most cadpat anyways, but this stuff is great!!!) EDIT: Will never get over just how shitty marpat looks. At least it doesn't stand out as much as woodland does in the bush. |

I went to Parris Island in North Carolina, the USMC's recruit training base, and got a private tour. They were all wearing woodlands MARPAT and it looks pretty good actually, the pics on the net don't do it justice. It also seems to be alot more brown in pictures than in real life.

Ok, took some pics tonight. I spent a long time trying to get the colours exactly right and I'm pretty sure you'll see the difference between the pants and shirt.
The last one seems a little washed out because of the flash from the camera. First two were taken without flash. So now that you can see exactly what I'm talking about, what do you guys think? As for legality... when I have to pay GST to purchase an item then it better bloody well be legal. The government got it's penny and I'm not breaking any Criminal Code of Canada rules (ie. Not trying to impersonate a member of the CF). That CBC report is a regular scare tactic report for ratings and to make a story out of nothing. The report should have been about how our guys don't have cadpat AR vests and are still wearing the cadpat TW stuff in afghanistan. In any case, the MP's are free to come down and inspect the stuff marked with a big D on the tag. Go read the CCC and if you can tell me exactly where I break the law by owning this legally obtained, not the goods of crime, surplus that has no shoulder flashes or rank insignias I'll burn the stuff tomorrow. (Except then I'd be breaking the law for destruction and sabotage of crown assets lol).

Yeah, they're issued, the Gen2 seemed to be a mix of brown and green hues. The Gen3 was evened out a little better and they all appear to have the green hue.

Ahh, so you think that's a Gen2 shirt?
I'm happy with them, I was sure they're genuine, and in a way it's nice to have something that's a little different from what most people will have.
