If you are still doing the 101st impression around the time of Normandy no identification flag was used.

However, paratroopers and glider troops of the 82nd Airborne as well as the glider pilots were issued this item.

This is what the guys of the 101st wore in Operation Market Garden. Like Matt said the 82nd wore the flag on D-Day.
