The pipe insulation doesn't do a thing. Tried it already.

Dynamat on the mechbox shell should reduce the higher frequency resonance that cast alloy will have. Foam around the mechbox of an AUG works better. When I had my AUG with foam around the mechbox and a silencer, guys couldn't hear it from 20 feet away in the bush.
I put pipe-insulation into my ICS silencer, first I cross drilled the insulation then put it into the silencer, it does make a notable difference. Maybe this is because the silencer body has holes already not sure; but it does work.

It's only a foam filled barrel extension if the barrel goes all the way to the muzzle. If it doesn't- it's a silencer= prohibited.

The letter of the law is clear-cut. Any device that reduces the report of a firearm is prohibited. But if this is the case, then pop bottles could also be prohibited, as they make effective (yet with a limited lifespan) silencers.

However, the classification of an airsoft gun is dubious and not all aspects of the CCC will apply as it would to all guns. If it did, you'd all be using semi-auto guns with 5 and 10 round magazines and 650mm OAL.

But this isn't the case now, is it?

Even in the US silencers are prohibited unless you have a class 3 Firearms liscence which many don't due to the cost per year of it. As far as getting caught with an airsoft gun and homemade silencer, you'd probably be doing something illegal with it anyways. Just remember when you have the airsoft guns with you they are concealed in something and not out in the open. We stopped a guy one nite who had a real firearm and spray painted the end of the barrel orange and tried to pass it off as a toy gun. Needless to say he had a set of matching bracelets after that.

I think just about ever airsoft player in the Northern part of the US owns some type of airsoft silencer (not everyone but a good amount of people) as far as getting caught just dont go do something like play in front of a police station, if your worried about having a fake silencer then where ever the hell you are you most likely shouldn't be, save it for the field don't go waving a mk-23 with a big ass extension at your neighbor.

Pipe insulation DOEs suppress a fair bit if used with a proper GBB (my experience with this stuff is only on my KSC M11A1 with a suppressor designed by me) as long as you cut it in 1" thicknesses and half of them you slice away half of the inside section of the foam, then stack it in the suppressor body full-half-full-half-full-half, etc. This creates baffles that reflect and absorb the noise, but more importantly absorb and reflect the gas pressure waves created by expanding gas. I can't see this working overly well on an AEG, but for my M11A1, coupled with a full inner barrel extension, with the second half of the inner barrel with groups of holes to vent gas, literally gives my loud GBB a clackity-clack sound of the bolt cycling to the gun. It also increases the stock 330fps to between 360-400fps with suppressor on. Yes, shocking to me as well!

Baa!! Open cell foam is much easier, and works better too.

The venting of the barrel did 95% of the job, just like the muffelr in your car does it. Takes high pressure gass to lower pressure over a larger area. The foam would have stopped any hissing sounds, but it sucks otherwise.

And I have tried it in an ICS silencer. You need to increase surface area to the expanding gas. Open cell foam does this, just like the baffles in an anechoic sound chamber, where there is zero reflected sound. Closed cells offer no increase in surface area, that's why it doesn't work and science is on my side here.

Yes, I know, even though I didn't point it out in such details in my thread. I DID however point out that doing this to an AEG would literally do little. But what I pointed out isn't the material I used, but the way I used it. Internal baffels that reflect and somewhat absorb does very well with closed cell foam. It's just a bitch to cut out and position properly. Open cell foam does a great job though, as long as the gun in use has a reasonable amount of it's noise coming from the end of the barrel. Most AEGs don't.

Think of a square digital wave as shown on an oscillioscope, you have a huge surface area of sound absorbsion, that is what I did with my M11A1 suppressor, and it shows at least as much absorbative surface area as a flat straight tube of open cell foam does, maybe even more.

Doing it the way I outlined above, using the pipe insulation stuff, is easier because it cuts easier and it'll hold it's form bettern than much less dense open celled foam would doing the same thing. Problem with open cell foam, depending on the type you choose, is that it can very easily get in the way of a passing BB simply because of recoil (experienced when working on my MK23 supressor rebuild project).

Just make sure that the exit path of the BB's in the self-made suppressors are uniform and even. I've seen even (and owned :-() commercial airsoft suppressors that are poorly constructed that cause BB wobbles as they leave the suppressor.
