building an AK
so i have built an M4 that i love and now i want an AK. Im just wondering how much some of you have put into yours?
I dropped just under 1G into my M4 but it looks like building an AK form scratch should be cheaper! Who do you recommend for a mechbox and nice wood (looking or real) grips. I have heard that the 203 launchers are really flawed but they look SOOOOO good. any comments are help full Thanks Jeremy

Ive built 2 aks, I used a TM mech box and a JG, i bought as much as i could form places like e-hobby or UN company to save a shit load of money. The most annoying part is trying to find a body in canada cause everyone is putting one on their kraken. I didnt put on a wood kit on either of these cause i went for the tacticool look, but my next ak is going to be full wood and metal, I spent under 700 on one cause i bought it broken then changed all my internals to systema (including a magnum motor $$$) And the other ak is a krinkov which i'm not even going to mention how little i spent on it...
Hope it helps,if youve got any questions shoot a PM my way

The issues with the launcher (which is not an M203 btw) comes from the G&P model that uses a proprietary format for the shells. The star model will take any 40mm "standard" shells, so performance will be exactly the same as anything else.

Well one member i believe used a kraken base and pretty much used 3 parts from it, while buying internals and externals and a case of beer for a total of 560ish. But then again he put together everything himself and then had the beer. .

It wasn't the shells that were the concern i head it was the trigger assembly for the launcher that was flawed.
So its looking like 700ish +- to build a nice AK Who do you use for the stock&grips? I really don't like to feel crappy plastic body parts (JG) so i need something solid (money is no worries for me) Thanks for all the info so far, keep it coming. P.S. Its a V3 so is there any point in a re-enforced mechbox? (will be shooting 380ish)

Is there even such a thing as a reenforced V3?

I bought a broken tm ak for 250, replace the internals with systema internals for 200, Got a ris kit/stock/grip for 80 and paid 100 for a systema magnum motor. But I got the ak cheap as hell so you should expext more than 700, And if you want to add the launcher you'll need to add more money.

The V3 is already a reinforced design over the V2 mechbox, but there is such a thing as a V3 made of crap metal. Make sure you buy a good brand of V3 mechbox, like Guarder.
