can batteries be modified?

I just got my battery for my L85A1 and the damn thing does'nt fit! From the looks of things the wires are HUGE and prevent me from closing the handguard shell becuase their so thick. The other problem is that the 7th cell is to long to fit into the handguard if it's sitting "sideways in the handguard so it need to be going length wise but the wires are to short to do this.
Is it safe to take the wires of the cells and re-solder some skinnier wire on them? Also if thats possible can I just splice the 18awg to the 14awg near the plug? And how do I remove the old solder from the cells?
Thanks.

just get a little pouch (you can buy for airsoft) that attaches to the handgaurd and you can just run the wire through the holes of the handgaurd

Batteries can be modded...but read up on some detailed How-to's first.

Do not let the battery cells get hot. Use a really hot soldering iron and try to be as quick as possible.

If you have a junk battery, do a test run first so you get the wiring orientation/length sorted out.

To de-solder you can either get a de-soldering bulb (which sucks up hot solder), a de-soldering wick (which wicks away liquid solder) or you can just file it off.

ok groovy. Does wire type matter? I've picked up some 16guage copper primary wire for automotive electrical work, will that do the job?

Go to Hobby Wholesale on Gateway north and get the silicone wire they have in-stock. Try not to use thick-stranded automotive wire, it's insulation is not rated for 200C like the silicone nor will it be friendly for soldering or bending when you need to stuff the battery in there.

hmm ok thanks! this stuff seems pretty flexible at not really that "thick" but I don't really know about the insulation.

The silicone wire is about as flexible as you can get in an easy to acquire wire, but the insualtion is not all that tough, but it's rated for much higher temperatures that XLPE-based insulation.
