Handguard Length
What would be the 'correct/recommended' handguard length for a AR15 with a 16 inch barrel?

It depends on what the barrel was machined too. They can come in the standard carbine length aswell as a midlength (which is between the carbine and full length). I have also seen some full length foregrips on a 16" but there is only around an inch of barrel beyond the foregrip.

16 inches, heavy barrel (no notches). I currently have a 12 inch LaRue on it but its a bit to long. I'm looking at 10 3/4" or 9" atm.

12.5" will work just fine if you want a free float system. Otherwise maybe 10"?

Most of the 16" barrels in canada come machined to carbine length foregrips. Alot of people (including myself) dont like that though because it dosent look right. I personally think that the 9" midlength with a 16" barrel looks proportionally correct. Foregrip sizes are 7" (carbine) 9" (midength) and 12" (rifle/full length).
