Moding gun for Film?

I am a director and have been hired to film a series of shorts for a Studio. I purchased some airsoft guns, some gas blow back and some electric. What i would like to know is if there is a way i can modify them to cycle through as if they were fireing (with the gas blowback actions and all) but not actually fire any type of bbs.

thank you for any help you may have for me

dan

that would still engage the slide catches on gbbs

You'd want to either wedge something in the magazine to hold it down or remove the spring and follower that push up the bbs (as the follower is what engages the slide catch). If you want GBBRs I suggest WE, they are cheap and have a lever that disables the bolt catch just for such occasions as this.

The electrics will cycle without BBs in the mags.

The GBBs may require the slide locks to be modified to not actually catch the slide - most of them will lock back with an empty mag to mimic their real world counterparts. You may want to contact an airsoft gunsmith, such as Illusion, to see if this is possible.

Edit: AngelusNex may have provided you your answer. I wasn't aware of that method.

If you're talking to an airsoft gunsmith about dry firing guns for film purposes you might also want to look into seeing if you can bring the spring power down a bit or install sorbothane pads in the cylinders to improve the durability of your weapons during dry firing.

If using AEGs he won't need to actually shoot them, the only thing they do when shot is spit bbs, remove the bbs and they are motionless props.

Grab some KJW M4 GBBRs, the Mags allow dry fireing.

Thank you for all the comments. I am mostly focusing on the gas blowback Glock 17 and the Mac 11 gas blow back. on the mac 11 i lock the loading spring on the mag in the open position and it will fire for about 3 seconds then stop then i have to cock it again and it fires again. With the glock i can not lock the slider down, but I would like to be able to shoot it with and empty mag. Is there anything i have to modify on it to be able to do so?

take the mag, remove the spring that feeds the bbs, their is a follower on it that pushes the slide lock once their is no more BBs. Without this follower the slide will not lock back when mag is empty.

thank you very much everyone for the suggestions, the guns did not come with manuals but i think it should be straight forward on how to remove said spring from the magazine Thank you again.

also if you do not trust yourself to take apart gas mags. take a pice of 1" white cloth camera tape and roll it sticky side out until its thick enough to wedge above the follower. the adhesive/friction will stop it from going up. did this on set a few weeks ago, takes all of 5 seconds to do.

as for aegs' dont bother. the amount of modification required isnt worth it. trust me the camera wont register bolt movement that well, all you normally see is muzzle flare and smoke shell casings are mostly a blur. let alone the faster moving bolt. even 200fps the bolt only travels for 20~ frames. just dont go offspeed

Those who think the need to dry fire is unnesessary for aegs in films, its actually quite important and benificial during filming that there is some distinct sound to register that the actor has fired a "shot"

this is for other actors (to know when they have been shot), editing, post effects (sound timing etc)

Interestingly enough I was part of a film shoot today that involved aeg's.
