Painting a clear lower receiver

So i was thinking of painting my tinted, lower receiver on my m4. I now regret not dishing out the extra cash on a full metal body. Oh well. I haven't taken it apart yet and was looking for any tips some of you people may have.

I was just looking to paint it a matching black of the upper or the tone of the stock and rails. Nothin fancy. Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

Shake...spray...repeat as necessary.

And make sure the can is about a foot away from the gun. Use many light coats as opposed to one heavy coat. Leave time between coats to dry. Its not a race, if you don't take your time and let the coats properly dry your gun will look like ass.

Use Krylon Fusion Camouflage Ultraflat Matte Black

Don't use that satin finish stuff. Ultraflat all the way. The one with the camo on it and pictures of guns... Get it from CT.

For best results, do not engage full auto on your spray can. Fire the paint in the shortests bursts of semi you can and keep moving to a new area. Once you have your first coat on, go check what's on TV. Come back 5 minutes later, repeat for a few more coats.

Whatever you do don't hold down the spray nozzle for more than half a second. You risk painting a drip on your gun and that looks completely unrealistic.

/\/\ +1 However i dont like using Krylon but thats my opinion i use High Heat BBQ Paint and if used properly its awsome even on plastic but you have to use heat

Another tip is to paint the inside that way youll keep the trades......

Krylon Fusion is my paint of choice, just be sure to use Krylon's clear coat to seal the finish, and to keep the paint from wearing. Clear coat is available in matte finish. I get it from Michael's.

CT Dupont Exterior Car Trim Paint is ideal

Green Can, has a mirror in it!

Has a bit more shine but NEVER wears off like Krylon does.

Paint the inside of your receiver as well. That way if there are scratches or if paint flakes off it'll still be black.

Spawn and Styrak are on the right track. Paint the inside if you can, gets the best finish and you can save the trades easily.

When spraying, spray from side to side, start and stop spraying away from the receiverto avoid drips. And spray at an even pace to maintain an even coat. Less is more, you can always add if needed.
If you forget or ignore everything else just remember to be patient while painting.

Well thanks for the tips guys i think I am going to make a trip to michaels later and pick up a can of some Krylon Fusion.

Im gonna hang it from a wire in the garage and remember to take my time.:salute:

Well I made a trip to michaels and they had no Krylon Fusion matte black so I picked up some regular Krylon matte black. I forgot to get the clear coat, maybe tommorrow.

I think it turned out nice, had a little bit of dripping by the rear above the pistol grip but you cant tell unless your right up to it.

I layed it out with the upper and pistol grip and the were all different shades so i went ahead and painted them all too. Should look pretty good when its all assembled again. Thanks for the tips guys.

This is slightly late, but with clear/smoked bodies, you can paint them from the inside. This way, trades aren't harmed, and it's fully chip resistant, because chips won't get at them ( :eyeroll: ).

That's how I painted my FAMAS.

Just a thought, maybe for somebody in the future or for another of your projects.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone considered using RIT dye or similar to dye plastic receivers a different colour? That should be 100% chip proof, no?
