V2 ICS spur + bevel gear locking?

I'm shimming an ICS lower for a friend, and even before I opened it I noticed this. The gears would spin and then lock up, and have 0 play (rotational or up and down/side to side). I opened the gearbox and inspected for any damage and found nothing.

After shimming, each gear will spin fine by itself, and the spur gear will work with the sector gear, but when I put the sector and bevel gear in, the jamming starts again.

Here's the weirdest part: it happens randomly. Sometimes the gears will spin for several revolutions and jam, and sometimes they just jam up right away. They can be freed again by pressing hard to spin the gears, so they're not locked up on anything mechanical.

Any ideas?

Also check for a small metal shaving the the gears.

If he has a recent ICS, the bevel shaft can slide out, moving the beveled section a bit. If the shim job is tight enough, it will bind.

Well, I guess it was a faulty bevel gear. I replaced it and everything went back to normal.
