A Good Story

I wanted to post a good story after reading some pretty sad stuff over the past week.


We have a field we have been playing at for the past 6 months. You may have read snipets about it and seen a few videos. Many of the best players have played here.

The field is raw and now heavily covered. There are LOTS of places to hide. All natural setting with woods, trenches etc.

This is set out in farm land and like its own feature among farm field and a close nit farm community.

EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE out here.

So I mentioned to the owner I would like to build stuff that is more substantial. This is for when the leaves fall off, and the grass dies out. We want to play this all year round.

The owner (farmer) is working on getting us an all weather road in with a locked gate for our games.

I went by a few days after this discussion and I was in the woods and noticed 4 HUGE posts in the ground. I am talking telephone poles diameter. They were plum level, and spaced out about 10 feet apart. They were put in and crushed gravel was used to secure them. Thought is was some kind of building he was putting in to store stuff etc. Pretty heavy duty stuff.

So fast forward to today, I met up with the owner before work. Him and his grandson putted up in the Kabota. Gave him his field fees for this weekend and chatted.

I asked him out of curiousity what the 4 huge posts were. His 12 year old grand son piped up and said:

"its a fort we are building for your guys!.... all the local kids are building it---cool eh?...you guys needed a building to hide in right?"

That's a very cool thing they did ! It's fun to see kids nowadays doing that kind of stuff, rather than staying home and doing the same thing in Minecraft all day long.

Farmers always do cool stuff when the mood strikes them (and they've got the machinery to do it big!). And I've never met a good guy who does things half assed.

The kids dug the holes BY HAND through the tree roots 5 feet deep.

I asked.

The kid said, "the tree roots were a bit tough when we were digging"

I asked the farmer, no auger??

He smiled and said..nope. Kids got to learn.

You should take all the kids one day to do some target practice, show them some awesome gear, and maybe get them play a game..

That sounds fantastic, Trev. Good on those kids for doing something like this - definitely not from the average crop of gameboy kiddies. Having a build-day coming up in September, it might be a good idea to bring up some of our big-boy toys along for them to give a try out after the work is done as a reward, if they should be around and about on that day.

Ironically these kids already shoot real guns,(.22's) (job is to get rig of the racoons), and they have pellet guns.

As you can imagine, they grow up FAST in the farms and sitting around is not tollerated.


I go to the local Flamborough speeday and you see kids 15-16 in the thunder car series (winning) and they get up on the roof of the car at the end of the race and usually the announcer comments he (or she) doesnt have a licence yet. That usually gets a bit of a laugh in the stands. (btw the Thunder Cars are late model 400 HP full sized cars--unusally impallas or olds)


I am probably going to do a father and son thing for the local kids very soon. Going to see how far they take this fort in the mean time.

They mentioned they are "hauling steel down next" so I think this could get crazy.

You will see the posts in the ground this Sat. Still laughing as when I saw it I immeditately thought, "shit now thats a structure man!....probably a shed or something"

Still had the strings for the squaring up, the left over gravel etc.

Should have seen the kids smile. Like "how bout them apples" pride

Dont know how you can help, but I am sure we are open to offers.

I am certain they are playing in their when we are not around. FOR SURE.

(that is between chores--the kids were off to take down a 1000 foot barb fence today. By hand)

That sounds amazing! I wasn't expecting to see any large or sturdy structures for a while, but it sounds like we're getting things pretty much built to code! I can't wait to see what can come out of a build day.
Now if only we could take over the whole middle field and fill it with buildings...

If the walls and the rest of this turn out like the footings, I might get my mail forwarded this this thing. Make it a secondary man cave.

Ps--- for those of you who have been to the field it is located by the fire pit but about 50 feet further in on the north side. They are obviously trying to fill out the area that has the least cover.

This is a wonderful story. I grew up on a farm in Nova Scotia and your right no time for standing around. Sun comes up you start working and you don't stop unilt 6 for supper! I actually miss those days. Work had a true purpose. Sorry I degress.. Where is the farm you guys play on? Southern Ontario?
