One of these things is not like the other
Just super bored at 2am, and am kinda curious. What the hell is the deal with those notches?

Not 100% sure, but my guess is that's a notch for the tool to remove them. The ones with the notch are completely round, while the one without the notch has the flattened sides which can be gripped by a wrench.

Hmm, I'm not sure, the three notched flash hiders still have the flat sides for the wrench, they're just thinner, furthermore, looking on google for airsoft flash hider tools mostly shows thin wrenches.
