Question Modifying Vests and Pouches: Supplies and DIY Resources

Does anyone know of a good source for Cordura, velcro and other milspec nylon fabrics? Preferably Canadian?

I've been wanting to modify my plate carrier so it fits a bit better and doesn't rattle around so much but I've been unable to find a local source for milspec sew-on Velcro tape, and Nylon thread.

Forget local craft stores. Michael's barely sells basic cotton thread, and Fabricland didn't have a clue what cordura or webbing was when I told them I wanted to make a backpack...

All of my gear is Ranger Green, which I suspect will make it harder to find matching velcro.

Anthony,

If you can meet up with me during the work week I have a few spare spools of od nylon 69 thread I can sell you for cheap. Got a bunch of OD hook and loop rolls too plus webbing, etc. Since I don't sew much anymore. PM me. Actually might be easier if you can drop by my place in Mississauga some time.

Where did you get it from? Unfortunately OD Velcro wouldn't look the greatest against Ranger Green Cordura.

I'm also considering sewing some smaller custom pouches, and would need to get more than just the velcro and thread.

It's not that different but I understand your concern. Anyways, look for materials suppliers via Google around Dufferin and Lawrence but first get yourself a vendor permit as they only deal with businesses. I have a bunch of stuff but not ranger green.

That reminds me. You should get an industrial sewing machine if you don't have one; walking foot ideally.

The only thing I see near Dufferin and Lawrence is a Fabric Land.

You're only looking for retail; look for wholesale or distributor. Hence the need for the vendor permit. Register as a business and then you'll have access to the distributors/wholesalers.

Double-check the quality of the webbing and what it's made of. Nylon is generally stronger and also check for UV and strength ratings. Some of the stuff will disintegrate within a few years left sitting around.

Do you have a name for the place you're thinking of. Nothing pops up on Google maps, and nothing sticks out in street view.

Try "outdoors material supplier webbing cordura nylon" or something to that effect.

If you don't mind paying for shipping you could try this?

DS Tactical in BC has stuff like this but it's not all online.

Supply Captain in the USA is a solid online source.

+1 on both DS Tactical and Supply Captain. Both are really great shops to buy from. Supply Captain will result in border duties and such though.
