Question Rain Gear Recommendations

I'm looking for rain gear and would like some recommendations.

I'd prefer an actual jacket as opposed to a poncho. Something available in solid colours, as I'd like to be able to use it in a civilian context and for hiking. Preferably something I can stuff into a pack for every-day carry. Preferably goretex, but doesn't matter. Must have a hood, but doesn't have to accomodate a helment, and should be suited for medium to warm range temperatures; so... 5C and up?
Budget is $200, but preferably less.

But... I'm also curious what people use.
Thanks!

Goretex is great if you're standing around mostly, doing nothing, or on really cold or windy days. But you'll be pretty warm in it.

Soft shells are great all around, I've had mine in 30mm rainstorms and been just fine. Lets enough water in to keep you cool, keeps enough out to not freeze you.

USGI surplus Gore-Tex. Can be had for $200 in new condition or much less for used/repaired. Bought a set at a gun show, thinking about removing the liner from the jacket as I really only need the Gore-tex shell to go over my clothes and gear.

Also, buy Arcteryx when it comes on sale. I bought a Beta jacket (mid-level Gore-tex) for $260 new on half price at Sports Experts. But it is a faggy blue, fine for going to the movies, not so much for airsoft.

It does not need to be Goretex. There are other fabrics out there that offer similar performance to Goretex (ex. Event). If you want affordable Goretex your options are surplus or Outdoorsy brands at a discount, (Mountain Hardwear, Arcteryx, Patagonia, etc) North Face makes decent Non-Goretex jackets at a competitive price and offer good protection. The reason why Goretex is not necessary is because if you wear a softshell/water resistant hard-shell jacket and a fleece jacket underneath. You have very good rain protection due to both jackets being water resistant. There are also outdoor companies that cater to LE and Military, if you want something tactical. (Ex. Arcteryx LEAF)

I am currently using an Arcteryx Beta and it performs well. I would never buy it though....too expensive.

Patagonia Primo Goretex hardshell in grey. Use it all the time, all 4 seasons. Summer for rain, winter for skiing as a hard-shell under polartec(?) Arcteryx mid layer.

Threw it on for a few ops as a rain/wind block.

Any other comparable goretex shell would work well.

You can get a used ECWCS Gen2 goretex parka for under $100 if you shop around (M81 or DCU), and a newer Gen3 in MC for about $200.

They have no liners and by themselves aren't as warm as a softshell (which does have a minimal liner), although they do keep moisture in more when they're dry.

Another alternative is to get a lightweight hiking rainjacket: dark grey-green/FG style colors aren't uncommon, or if you really want to preserve your camo (and maybe protect the expensive jacket from damage) you can wear it UNDER your combat shirt.

Solid color, packable, hood?

Outdoor Research Helium jacket in CB.

I have both this version (full shell) and the hybrid hard/softshell in orange (for SAR) and they're my go-to three seasons shells.

It sounds that the Patagonia Torrentshell is right up your alley.

I've had mine in "Oaks Brown" aka Coyote Brown for a few months now and love it. The jacket can be stuffed into one of it's front pockets for stowage. It also happens to be under your budget and locally available at the MEC downtown Toronto.

Again, depends on the temp you play at in the rain. Goretex might make you too hot.

I work a block away from MEC. Maybe I'll stop by Monday and see how it feels. Price and description sound good.

Just visited the Arcteryx store in North Vancouver. Nothing special up there, they had some stuff on sale but it was still pretty pricey. No LEAF gear except for some knee caps. One of the workers there told me that they get LEAF stuff rarely, and that the when they do go back in stock its usually in unusual sizes at the end of the season. (So they just randomly pop up) They had some Arcteryx V series jackets, but they were as much as the LEAF products. Not much selection due to the limited sizing of gear.
