Which class do you intend to compete in?

It may be cheaper for someone to actually get their restricted PAL, and pickup an actual handgun, and compete in a stock gun IPSC class. Thats what I would personally do, but thats just me. Although its not as cheap to feed a 9mm as it is an airsoft.
(Edit: But then again I guess thats always been the case with airsoft versus real. But in this peticular case if youre really interested in IPSC I would lean towards real, if that happens to fit your current situation.) |

Since when can you use an airsoft pistol in IPSC?

I believe the original poster had airsoft IPSC in mind, rather than using an airsoft pistol for real-steel IPSC.

I know for a fact that an airsoft gun would not even come close to making it in a real IPSC competition. And you guys are correct; cheaper to get a PAL and a real .45

Okay, I thought I was losing my mind. I've never seen airsoft at an IPSC comp and I wouldn't dare show up with one for fear of being laughed at to death.
The differences between shooting a real bullet and a BB are so vast that I think the dynamics of an IPSC shoot with airsoft guns would make it a rather boring event. Yes, you could use airsoft to practice in your basement to gain muscle memory for things like static positions, posture, transitions and so forth. But nothing replaces trigger time on the range. It might be more interesting to create an airsoft specific combat shooting course that embraces those airsoft differences rather than try and apply real steel rules against weapons that don't meet those specifications. IPSC rules are also very much geared around safety, whereas you can be a little looser with airsoft and get into shooting that would never be allowed in an IPSC competition. |

you can find IPSC airsoft competition mainly in asia countries like Hong Kong and Taiwan.
here are a few links: www.hksdu.com www.hkstcipsc.com www.airsoftipsc.org actually i don't compete in any IPSC competition. a friend and myself compete against each other in the basement shooting dominos, cards, and paper targets. i'm mostly a collector and would like to make the necessary mods so i can get an edge. Thanks |

If you're into more reality-based courses of fire, check out IDPA. Much more fun and they're not as uppity as IPSC guys LOL.
Using airsoft to train for IPSC may not be so farfetched since it looks like so many of them shoot with very light loads, in which case the recoil might come close to that of a propane running GBB. Can anyone confirm this? I also seem to remember a story about a Japanese chap who trains with airsoft as real-steel is banned at home, and goes over to the US competes in IPSC with a rental racegun. He seemed to place somewhere in the top 20. |

If you're willing to pour in the cash, you could build a gun that closely resembles an IPSC gun in weight and features. Recoil? To match a .45? I dont think so.
Heck, I know so, from real experience. Techniques that would apply in both games? There are several; aiming, drawing, holds, trigger control, speed. |
