Piston selection
I wanna upgrade the piston in my psg-1 and was wondering if I should go with an aluminum or polycarbonate ? Also since I have this started will the old Systema Torque up motor be able to handle the PDI 180% spring ? Mine doesn't seem to want to pull it back.

im not sure about the motor but an aluminum piston with a 180 spring is asking for a cracked mechbox. Go polycarbanate.

What kind of gears are you using?

Pm Illusion. He's done upgrades like that and more extreme for the PSG-1. FWIW, Systema makes a 300% kit for it, so it will at least handle that. PDI 180% would take it to about 400ish fps. Not fabulous for a semi-auto gun.

I've got the PSG-1 upgrade gears. Yeah right now it's shooting 402fps on the chrony. Systema now has the 400% kit but i'm not wanting to go that far. I just want to upgrade the rest of the stock parts. Illusion has helped me on troubleshooting before but I never really asked abotu this.

+1 +1 +1 for polycarbonate (maybe 3 metal teeth poly pistons). What ever the costs are its not worth the gears and IMO re-shimming them.

You could go with either of the pistons, polycarbonate will wear down a bit faster, though.

Alright. We only play maybe twice a year and it doesn't see much action outside of that. So I may install the metal piston and if they get wore down give me an excuse to buy the Systema FTK. Also would adding a LiPo battery be a good idea for this setup ?

Yeah, it'll help decrease your shot-to-shot times. Since the system is full auto, there shouldn't be any issues with a high voltage setup.

Go high quality li-poly. No memory probs. No need to discharge it. 11.1 20c 1500mah- waaaay better than any 9.6. Takes up waaaay less room. More power. Annnd, if you happen to fry it, a li-polymer will only distort(bubble-up). Oh, and they can be had for cheap. I own quite a few, and I will never go back to nicd or nimh.

Yes, my apologies. I didn't have my morning coffee yet.

Not necessary. MOSFETS help with pull, not push. High voltage = push. High current (resulting from high powered springs) creates a pull. It's the current pull that burns out the selector plates.
At 400fps, you shouldn't have any major issues with that, although MOSFETS will give you a tiny ROF boost. You're better off getting a torque up gear set and a higher torque motor (DON'T get the Systema Magnum motor or you won't be able to release your piston.) I realize all of the above is probably incomprehensible. I'm sketched out from too much coffee and I'm also exhausted. |
