Almost Old Enough for Airsoft

Okay so I'm 16 right now, almost 17. So that means one more year before I can finally start buying/upgrading and enjoying the great sport of Airsoft. Right now I currently have a stock Kraken Ak-47. No work has been done on it, no new batteries, same charger it came with.....Absolutely nothing changed.

My goals for when I'm 18 is to have the gear required to start playing airsoft. (Bear minimum stuff) My question is, should I bother upgrading the Kraken I have now or look to buying a new airsoft gun when I'm 18. I've found someone that can possibly do the modifications for me (so I don't screw up the Kraken) for $230 in total.

This is a message that I recieved from him awhile back about the modification Pricing:

-modify 110 spring ( should shoot in the 395-405 fps range) 15$
- Guarder air seal nozzle 15$
-Modify ball bering CNC aluminuim piston head 20$
-Guarder black hop up rubber with nub 10$
-Guarder stainless steel 6 mm bushings 20$
-Prometheus piston 50$
-CNC aluminum cylinder head with impact absorbing sorbothane pad 25$
im
All missing is a ball bering steel spring guide but i will order one. 15$

Now what I will do is open up the gun and clean up the box, reshim ( most important part) and re grease with high quality superlube. all the parts will be instaled and I will test it out.

Should take about 3 hours of labor @ 20$/hour

so in total 170$ in parts and 60$ in labor so it comes up to a total of 230$.

So really my question is, is this worth it. Or would I be better off to go buy a new gun. (Im looking to just be able to play on a field with other airsofters.)

P.S. I still need to contact him to see if he can still do this for me.

I've heard Kraken can be upgraded to become decent/reliable ...... so I'd personally have it upgraded but that's just me. Also make sure the guy upgrading knows what he's doing :P

This guy is on a team in my region. I'm assuming he knows what hes doing. He's also a member of this site.

While the Kraken seems to be the flavor of the month for hobby projects, IMO you would be better off with a complete gun that won't require tinkering out of the box.

But it boils down to if you are happy with what you have now", or you want to go for something else.

A word of advice, play for a while before you even think about upgrading. Learn how to play first. You'd be suprised what you can learn with a stock gun. I am at a loss as to why so many beginners, much less people who do not even play, seem to think they need to upgrade the crap out of their guns in order to play. I played for my first two years with a stock TM G36. Having an upgraded gun does you absolutely nothing if you don't know how to use it. Besides, save up you bucks and you can get a sweet gun package from the classifieds once you're age verified.

Thanks Darklen that does make sense. I havn't had any real use with it yet, except testing really quickly in the backyard. (Im in the middle of house districts, I would hate to do anything...that attracts the Media). Hopefully soon me and some buddies are going to a friend's farm. He has 25 acres of Privately Owned Forest, and a two story barn with no animals in it. So it should prove to be a good private playing field. Far away from other houses (a 1 hour walk to the next house).

True, the only power output upgrade I've made since 2004 is high-flow valves on a Glock 18c, but that had more to do with stability than extra FPS.

Also, 400 fps to the face at close range is not fun at all. Start with 300 (stock-ish velocities), then as Darklen mentioned see what you want to do with your gun.

Best advice I've heard from someone, and he's really right.

Get yourself some experience, build it up until you are ready and know how your gun and feels, and how it's supposed to feel to you.

Also, by saving up, you will be age verified when you hit 18, by the time you are 18, you probably could find an upgraded gun all done up for you in the classifieds, or you can get parts and upgrade yourself, which is a great thing for this hobby, and the point to get your hands all dirty.

Depends on the club, mostly no. Do some research on your locals before committing to a purchase.

Some places you can have players that are 16 and over, if there is a guardian. Or that you are well trusted on forums too.

Yea from what I can see, its 18+ or nothing around here. The best field I can think about (closest to me) is Wasaga paintball. Which can only be used if someone books the field off. And thats 18+ so I can't really play with anyone except my friends (which only have cheap walmart guns) unless I can find some people around barrie who are willing to invite me sometime to watch a game. ( I havn't seen on in person before)

My parents are alittle skeptical of airsoft. Even after my times of listing the pro's to con's they're still following the Why Shoot with guns? Why not play paintball instead. (I like the milsim of airsoft way to much and the realistic guns) and they watch the news to much, so the mass media has kinda influenced them whether they believe it or not.

I could most likely convince them to bring me to some kind of game to see, and yes of course I have a mask :P. If a paintball one will work. If not I can always buy another one.
