Iron Sights on an L96?
I was recently looking at the wiki entry on the Arctic Warfare series of rifles, and I noticed that the German Army issue G22 as seen here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:G2...lldaempfer.jpg has backup iron sights mounted. Now I'm curious if such a thing could be done to any one of the many L96's floating around the airsoft world, or whether or not someone has tried something like it.
I threw this together too to get a feel for it.

Iron sights for a sniper rifle used for long range, hmmm...
I don't think it's recommended. You can try, but it's still useless as you're firing a bolt action where the long barrel can guide you. |

im sure you could mount a rear sight easily enough
dunno what to do about the front iron sight though do it though it will be awesome |

Oh, I'm not thinking of using irons only. I only left the scope off of rthat picture so the rear diopter could be seen. I'm just looking for ideas on how to make an L96 look a little different than every other one out there without going overboard. Although a Finnish sniper during WWII named Simo Häyhä supposedly got over 500 kills in 100 days using iron sights alone but I figure that to be an exception rather than the rule.

The L96 barrel is too thick for any front iron sight. Only way is to weld a mini rail on there.
Only point of iron sights used to aim, and if your optics fail, BUIS which are back up iron sights, they are there in case of an emergency. Like if you are in the military, and you are in a fire fight, your scope/red dot whatever gets shot or malfunctions, you have your iron sights to save your life. |

Take a look at the link to the G22 picture. I looks like the front sight is meant specifically for the barrel. It would be an interesting fabrication job, but I think it's at least possible.

Excellent! Then I need an L96, a dummy magazine, a Harris bipod replica, a rear diopter sight, some sheet metal and a week or two to do some tinkering... lol
Now there's two projects to play with after I've moved!

If you find a 20mm rear flip up sight, and pair it with a clamp that'd fit over the barrel preferably one with a 5-10mm perpendicular point or straight edge sticking up vertically, I'm sure it would work quite well. Make your own front sight and then you'll proly have the first ever B.I.S. L96. |

Iron sights are better than no sights....optics fail, batteries fail...chunk of metal and a reference post doesn't fail as long as the "nut-behind-the-butt" knows how to use them.
Ever drop/bumped a rifle with only a scope attached? Do you really trust that that scope hasn't been knocked off zero?...you hope so...but it's not a happy time. The rear sight looks like a rail mounted HK sight. For a front sight, if you can find a sight that looks good, you can tap and drill a hole into the base and screw it in from inside the outer barrel of the L96. Epoxy/JBweld it as well for strength. The L96 airsoft barrel is just a hollow tube with spacers that hold the inner barrel centered. There is about an inch or so of muzzle cap that screws into the outer barrel...making it look thick and solid. You'd probably have to mount the front sight a bit further back from the muzzle to avoid messing up the threads. If you opt for the barrel band style...you may have to fabricate your own. Find someone with a metal sheet bender/roller...unless you have Terminator like hand strength. Another option (but it will likely not look real steel) is to find a block of aluminum...drill/cut out your own barrel band style mount. It'd be a lot of work, especially keeping things straight and true. Best of luck, sounds like a cool project. Tys |

I have seen M700's that come with a front sight thats welded/glued/something on the barrel. Funny thing is theirs no rear sight... O.o
