shooting cans

Hey fellow shooters how do you measure fps shooting at a can?, I shoot an arizona can and both my guns penetrated the skin, now when I shot the bottom of can it made a deep dent but no penetration. I was roughly 10 feet away.

Poor Man's Chronograph

Give's you a rough estimation of FPS, using 0.20g BB's. Heavier one's will give you less FPS, but more penetration so it's still definitely not as good as a real chronograph.

Check the little chart at the bottom of the page.

Shot through One Side - 290-310 FPS
Shot through Both Sides - 350-370 FPS
Shot through Bottom Center - 420-450 FPS
Shot through Bottom Edge - 450-480 FPS
Shot through Top Edge - 480-510 FPS
Shot through Top Center - 520-540 FPS

All estimations, yet again. Just gives you a rough idea. All shots done from a few inches away from the can. (they used pop cans)

I've tried the Poor Man's Chrony compared to a real chrony. Cans are too inconsistently built. I wanted to create a real chart that compared velocities. But it was just too way out there to even generalize. I deem it an utterly useless test.

And BTW, when shooting cans to "chrony", you don't shoot 10 feet away. You hold the can right up to the gun's muzzle.

That chart is completely inaccurate and wrong, and also depends on what kind of can you're using or what day it was made on. Use a real chrony.

No, I've shot through the bottom center with a 380fps gun.

....thought I said that the chart there was only a 'rough' idea of what range you might be in. Your shooting a damn pop can.

Instead of telling him to get a real chrony which would accurately tell him what FPS he has, I just pointed him to a chart that shows what range his FPS could be in.

So uh, yea.

In honestly dude, the cans are a no go. I've shot some cans with a 360 fps gun and it went right through the centre of the bottom. Yet with the same gun and another can, it only made a dent. Same with my 300-ish fps pistols. On one can, it goes through 1 side. On another, straight through both sides. Yet, on another, it dents the side only.

Believe me, I've tried to come up with a proper "can test" charge that was useable (using our cans, not the ones in Hong Kong) and it was futile.

*shrug*

Doing it gave me an idea at least how powerful the gun might be. If I can get it through the top and bottom in one go, it at least tells me I shouldn't shoot someone from too close of a distance.

Good call. That's about all the can test can really tell you. It's not possible to even semi-accurately test velocity with a can though. I've tried with about a dozen guns shooting different velocities, and the results were so variable that they were pretty useless.

If it goes through the top corner of the can - it's definetely not a legal gun unless you are sniping bolt action

thanks loathing for the info just was looking for a rough estimate is all,due to the different density in cans it impossible to gauge fps with cans. Thanks guys for your replies.

hey pipe, I can always bring the cronie out next game and you can check them both. For that matter it's at the store now so you can always pop buy with your guns to check them out exactly.

I was shooting at cans with .25's today setting up a scope. from 3 ft it blew straight through a coke can but after hangin it in a tree 75 ft away I was only dinting it. The gun shoots 335 fps w/.20's I really cant think pop can tests are that accurate.
