Kraken to AK74U conversion?
Would this be a lengthy and difficult project? Has anyone done it before?
ie - shortening the barrel from the back, new flash hider and gas block. Any info to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks |

Depends on how accurate you'd want it to be, for one. The fact you had to ask is also maybe an indicator that you'd be getting in above your head.
The receivers are different, both aesthetically and the way the pistol grip fits (the AK74 family doesn't have the ferule like the AK47/AKM). The AK-74SU has the side folding metal stock which won't fit a regular AK body; if you stick with the full stock you'd have something that looks more like that TM Beta Spetsnaz. Otherwise you'd have to find yourself an AK-74SU receiver -- and at that point, given you're starting with a POS Kraken and all the other parts you'll need to change, it'll be cheaper and easier just getting an AK-74SU. Other than that you need a different (shorter) sight block for the SU, short handguard, new gas block/front sight, flash hider... And that just gets you in the right neighborhood; there are other cosmetic differences if you want to be accurate about it (ribbed top cover, 74 fire selector, probably other stuff I don't feel like trying to remember).

don't waste your time only parts you will salvage will be the gearbox and inner barrel/hopup, just buy an aksu if you want an aksu, that is..if you are 18+

I actually wouldn't mind that. I have a tactical kit on it right now, and im not going for a 100% replica. So im not concerned about the receiver. Any suggestions in the way of shorter barrels, or a link to a beta gasblock?

I hate when people say that. How else to learn but to ask and do? one may be in over there head but thats how they learn so they are no longer in that position.

the body, top cover, pistol grip, front sight post, muzzle brake, handguards, selector switch etc. will need to be replaced, so really it would make more sense to purchase the gun from the classifieds than to undertake something like this, especially if they need to ask. Just because the response to his question is not positive, does not make it any less valid, good for him that he asked first so he can save himself the trouble of finding out the hard way. If he wants a short gun, he can get AV'd and try to find a complete Beta Spetz front end in the Parts classifieds, I've gotten two from there before and they do popup from time to time, then it's a matter of changing the front end to suit your needs

crossman makes something similar to what your looking for, im a 74 buff and they have a full auto airsoft gun they call an ak47 beta but with a couple mods like a 74 clip and dust cover it would look the same as what your after, it actually comes out of the box with and underfolding stock and a 74 flash hider( weird for an ak47 )

It would be cheaper to buy an AK74 than trying to covert a Kraken.

*edit it is also a POS plastic gearbox gun, a kraken is a better gaming platform.
