upgraded spring, new shims, new 16:1 gears, motor wont spin?
ok so i upgraded my ca g36c with new 16:1 high speed gears, new shims, and upgraded modify s120+ spring. i followed the online guide to the tee. put the gearbox together, and click... nothing. i dont think its the motor because its a ca high torque motor stock. i took the motor off and can spin the bevel gear with a mini screw driver and it feels like alot of spring tension. i tried to adjust motor height but to no avail. is my battery too small for my upgrades? need new motor? i have an 8.4v 1400mah mini battery. please help!

First check that you actually charged the battery. I did this several times and caused frustration, realizing that I just needed to charge the battery.
That is a small battery though, and I can imagine with hi-speed gears, which don't get the same torque as a standard or torque up gear set, coupled with that heavy spring (that is very heavy for high rate of fire / high speed gear sets!) is causing you problems. I would recommend trying a larger battery, but first ensuring that you charged this battery

High speed gears and a stiff spring with a mini?
Thats probably your issue, Maybe over-shimming too. What brand is you battery?

charged battery and checked voltage with multimeter, everything was fine. im going to try with a friends 9.6v battery today. does anyone else see a problem with this combo?

its an intellect battery, i made sure to test fit the gears with the shims and without the piston and spring in i could rotate the assembly easily with the halves screwed together.

Remove the motor mount, and try firing. Does the motor spin? If not, then you have an electrical issue

Start over...not kidding.
Take all the compression bits out (piston/spring guide/spring) and the tappet plate/tappet spring out) Reassemble. You should be able to move the gears with just a light touch (screwdriver or finger). Test movement with the sector gear...not the bevel gear. Reattach the motor/motor cage...fire it up. It should spin. If it jams, it's your motor height. Adjust motor height to you get the quietest sound (it'll still be pretty noisy like this...but relatively quietest sound). Open 'er up again and drop in a weaker spring (<m110). Test fire out of the rifle. Should fire...should be "quick". If not...go back into 'er. Gear ratio, shimming or something else is hanging it up. Once it's really going...drop in the M120. It should fire...if it doesn't at this point either your motor isn't getting enough juice from your battery or your motor is "weak". Test with a large 8.4v battery...if it doesn't work with that...you're motor is the cause. Tys |

motor spins freely by itself when not mounted, and seems to have enough torque. maybe i made a mistake $50 too lol. anyone wanna buy a set of nice king arms gears?

A spinning motor under no load means nothing (unless you can tell the torque curve by touch). Lots of "dead/weak" motors spin like stink on their own.
That's why you test with a "weak" spring, that let's you identify other issues...then put it under load with a heavy spring to isolate. Tys |

makes perfect sense. i did a little research and found out that a similar systema high speed gear set recommends a m100 or less spring. i guess the girl at the local airsoft shop didnt take this into consideration (bought them both at the same time). i think i may try a bigger battery/motor before i give up. and ill try isolating the problem like you said. thanks a whole lot everyone.

I'm pretty sure it's the battery. I was told before 9.6v works.
Was the motor and the gun working before you opened it up? |

yeah, worked like a gem. never had any problems with it.

ok, so i tried a 9.6 1300mah battery and no change, but the click was a little louder. im going to take the gearbox apart and try whay ty said and hopefully that will work. if not i talked to the owner of the store and he said that although he doesnt offer returns, he will give me full credit back and 10% off something else. if i use the standard gears, what other upgrades would benefit me? i already have a tightbore barrel and upgraded hop up. poly piston and new piston head?

Use the money to buy torque-up gears?

A modify S120+ is similar to maybe a M130-M140. I was getting rediculous fps with a S110+ already(S110+ was roughly like a M120)
try to swap out the spring for something else, such as a systema M120 or M110. Other than that, recheck your shimming. Also, one problem I encountered when I installed new gears was the tappet plate caught on something. With the gearbox closed try to push the nozzle back with your fingers, some part may be caught on some other part. |
