LXG guns

If I have to explain what that means, this will likely be a boring topic to you...well, after seeing the following pics:
Is it REALLY that much fun to duplicate the cover gun from Tactical Weapons Magazine, over, and over?
There is surely nothing unique in the finished item, and you KNOW other tinkerers are working on the same thing.
I'm about "black rifled" out...I do, however get all sweaty over a railed-out FN-FAL. I never did get around to railing-up a Tommy, just to piss off WW2 boys.

I had been thinking of doing clean-sheet designs of "Future Sci-Fi" type weapons.
Unfortunately, Sci-Fi has a history of getting it wrong. Look up "Space:1999" for example. Nobody is laboring to copy any guns or cars from THAT.

SteamPunk is wide-open. If you're reading in this sub-forum, you like to create, not just repair, right?
Not easy in a Milsim-dominated activity, huh? It's a given that results will be soberly dissected, evaluated, and critiqued to the nth. My heart goes out to the guys building Stoner63 replicas...that's not homebuilding, it's MUSEUM work. If ya wanna be a custodian, well, OK, but I'd rather be a creator than a curator.

If you can deal with Nicole Kidman, The Golden Compass is also a state of the art depiction of similar machines. I usually treat her work like toxic waste (I'm sorry, but I find Nicole as engaging as drying paint), avoiding it at all cost. Wifey was well into the flick when I came in, so I watched it anyway. Great effects, and constant MechPorn to look at.

What I like best about the SteamPunk aesthetic is, it's all based on BS to begin with, so the sky's the limit.

From the start, I got into airsoft to PLAY. I also think the time is right for doing this stuff.

Let's get the ball rolling on SteamSoft.
NOTES:
This is just the chassis so far, and made from looking at ONE screen shot from the movie.

26 minutes in.
Other than a cordless drill, NO POWER TOOLS WERE USED, zip, nada. After printing the outlines full-sized from CAD, I stuck them to 3mm ABS, and made ALL cuts using a Stanley knife, and using the score-and-break technique.

I HAVE to watch the movie again, to design the "skin" for it. Poor me

Once I have it all sorted out, I'll reverse-engineer the parts into CAD (I drew only the sideplate outlines to get started, 16.5" by 3.875", and winged it from there), and CNC a few bodies up.

They used Tommy's in the movie as well, got an old CYMA you want to refresh? Stay tuned...
this doesn't have to work well (although that is no problem to do), it just has to look the part, and "function".
As long as it gets recognized once in a while, it's pure success.
Note that it's full-auto only (see the glue-goober at the removed selector post), and the "safety" is yet to be added.

Considering this is a "minion" gun, failing in service isn't worried about, we got more minions...

This AK IS a 'FET gun, albeit a weak-sister one. It has an ancient "BUZ11" 'FET, and it feeds the stock motor/spring just fine.

Scott Hamshere is listed as "Armorer" for the LXG movie. Nice work, and should be fun to...gasp, choke,...copy.

This movie affected my design senses in a way only Blade Runner (and Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang, but don't tell) did before.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I've found myself.

I'm a SteamPunk. This is gonna open whole new schools of thought.

SteamSoft, Anyone?
I think Chitty-Chitty was the first SteamPunk movie...

CAD continues, not easy, due to the freakish, Mtv-style editing, the darn things are blurred in every shot! Hard to see here, but the AK front sight hangs out on the front of these. Mine's wrong...so far.

Interesting...this screw "does something" on the movie prop, it's the front mounting for the gun inside.

The Beta Spetz I used is wrong-
A full-stock, full-length AK is needed.
An Aftermath Kraken would be ideal.

Part of the "problem" to deal with in interpolating this item from a movie:
The gun switches back and forth between a LOEGAK and a LOEGTOM in the fight scene at approx 26:30 into the flick.
The Minions halt at the sight of Nemo, front guy has a LOEGTOM. Cut to a closeup, he's edgily brandishing a LOEGAK. Back and forth. Distance shots are the -TOM.

Offsets completed, these get cut on the CNC today.

Fresh-cut parts, I "grained" them with 80-grit wetordry.

Parts assembled. Time to walk away while the bonds all set up strong.

Since I sold all my AK's off, I have but the one Beta Spetz at the moment, so I don't have an AK buttstock to go on this...at the moment.

I buzzed out two more sets of parts, so THIS one will become a shorty version. I'll make a second rear panel for it, so a full-stock swap is possible.

And it STILL needs to be longer ahead of the forward grip!

Still very much incomplete...

ALL screws are short sheetmetal screws. Only a few actually do anything, most are 1/4" long.
Most of this would be MUCH more thought-out, if it all hadn't been done in three days...
I know, Phillips had to be born earlier for these to be here.

I've got most of the Bad-guy guns from LXG drawn up, but the AK version is the only one cobbled up so far.

This is the CAD for the AK version.

During glue-up.

The TommyGun is a bit more complex.

The gun pops right out without using any tools at all, and is un-modded.

Just don't start singing the song, and I'm OK with that.
