Modular Gear Set Smooth

I’m looking for input from anyone who has experience using the Modify Modular Gear Set Smooth.

I bought this gear set because I thought I could save some assemble time by not having to shim the gears. These Modify gear sets are advertized as being “pre-shimmed.”

After I opened up my set I was very interested in seeing the Modify’s “pre-Shimmed” set up. To my surprise I can see no shims on any of the gears. In fact both the bevel and the selector gear have .200 inch of side to side play!

Are they all this way or did I just happen to get a set where the assembler was on holiday when he put them together?

Also, too late I found out that in order to install a selector cam on the selector gear you have to have the disassemble tool to take the gear set apart.

I have smooth gearsets. They have no shims at all..never have had shims, even on the older "non-smooth" sets. It's the frame itself that keeps the gears properly spaced. Once you get them sealed up inside the mechbox there will be less play. If it really bugs you, use a slightly thicker oring on the outside of the bushings (if you look close, on one side of the gears there is a small rubber o-ring around each bushing) to take up the slack inside the mechbox.

As far as the tool goes, when I got my gears (through Airsoftparts.ca) it came with a little gear key....it is identical to the larger Modify key "required" for disassembly, so you only need another one of these to remove the gears, as the axle is threaded on both ends. Be aware that the little "nuts" you need to undo with the key have some kind of threadlocking compound on them....I had one shaft that had the nut on so tight that I had to remove the bushing, wrap the axle shaft in rubber and then lock it into a pair of vicegrips so I could get the torque to undo the nut. On the plus side, the axles are definitely machined steel....I used a variety of pliers on numerous attempts right on the bare axle shaft (with no rubber covering) to try to remove that stuck nut and it didn't even leave a scratch or indentation on it.

I just bought the Smooth Torque up kit and I want to change to 7mm bushings to fit the TORUS mechbox. I'm starting to think that the only way to remove the nuts is to purchase another gear key from modify. I just bought the FTK kit from Jugglez with the new bushings to replace the 6mm bearings but didn't realize that the nuts are threaded on both ends. Also the 7mm bushings have a channel to accomodate the o-ring should I remove the o-ring from the stock bearings and place them on the new bushings? This is kind of aggravating, is there a way to remove the nuts without purchasing another key????

Don't think so, bro. I had to get the second full-size key, although if you could find someone near you who also got a SMOOTH FTK you could use his mini-key as well as your own with a couple of pairs of vicegrips.

You can use the 6mm orings on the 7mm bushings, just remove it carefully and put on the 7mm bushing.

I must say I am very disappointed with modify modular smooth torque gear set.
After receiving a long awaited package from USA and trying to spin the gears in my hand it made quite a sharp sound instead of being quiet as I expected. The gears have also some will, between each other approx. 1 mm and one wheel is almost touching a second wheel. I was a bit disappointed with overall quality. But even bigger surprise was after installation (M135 spring). It makes a horrible sound. It so loud that you can’t have your gun on your shoulder otherwise you will get deaf. It is very sharp noise. Even after lubing there was no difference at all.

the sector and spur on mine contacted a bit as well, but after about 1k rds, it spun as smooth as silk.
regrettably I have a systema complete in my gun now instead of my modify "complete"(bought the best parts modify made separately and assembled them), but I assume you it works brilliantly unless you got a complete lemon.
make sure you've installed and adjusted the bevel properly.

ther is no way it can be installed incorrectly....
what about the sound it makes???

meaning that you did not adjust the bevel gear properly, and instead, just pressed it in. It's possible ><
I didn't have grinding noises, check your motor height, and also try to put the gears in a new mechbox and see if the noises disappear. Mine wouldn't work in a systema shell.

adjust how?
motor height is correct, previous gears were silent in this mechbox

Maybe you got a lemon then >< did it come with a warranty? Make a vid of you spinning the gears by hand perhaps?

I bought a key as well but for untightening is necessary to have two keys, anyway, it can be positioned by hand and it fits into bearings holes in mechabox firmly so there is no room for any movement. It seems to be ok but the sound it makes....
What do you mean by "lemon"??

I've got a set of the Modify smooth torque up gears mounted in a Deepfire 7mm gearbox. Best set of gears ever. I find they're not as quiet as the older Modify modular sets, but just as easy and convenient to install. And they're nice and smooth as the name implies.

Here is link to sound file I have recorded. The excesive noise is noticeable I think, in real it sounds even sharper....

Another fine thing I noticed, even though its a bit offtopis, sometimes after one shot on semi, trigger get stuck, I have to shoot on full auto a then it works again. Any idea why??

Second thing, i bought new hopup rubber, the red from prometheus, but the bb get stuck during firing, it wont go through rubber mouth. Hop up is all the way down.

out of curiosity, what motor are you using? is this a metal or plastic body?
