ICS MP5 Cycling incorrectly

I have a ICS MP5 that cycles oddly. While searching for air leaks after my last game, I removed the upper receiver and 'fired' the gun while holding on the nozzle and noticed through the port in the cylinder that the piston was returning to a half cocked position instead of returning to battery after cycling. This occurred on both semi and full, and frankly, I've no idea why.

The gun is using stock parts, and aside from this runs great. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary until actually seeing the issue with the gearbox out. I'd like to cure it so I don't wear out the spring from too much compression.

Are you using a really powerful battery?
