I've been bitten by the upgrade-bug

And ouch does it hurt.

It amazes me at how something so simple as a cracked mechbox has turned into over $500 worth of upgrades and I still need to buy a metal body once I have access to the classifieds.

Curse you online retailers and Paypal.

How did a cracked box become a $500 expenditure? Was there more than the shell damaged or what?

I decided to just replace the existing internals entirely. New Systema mechbox, motor, Prometheus hop-up. And I turned my AEG into an M16 SPR, so I had to get the conversion kit plus Vietnam style magazines and a bipod. So that was actually over $600 I think.

I don't get why people spend that much when they don't need to...

It's because you use element parts.

Try spending the money on Prometheus or equivalent parts. There's a very noticeable difference

Apparently the only thing he needed was a gearbox shell. So no, it's because he's buying a bunch of parts he doesn't need.
Any my Element steel 300% torque gears are doing great.

Likely it was based upon a "Well, since I'm opening it up anyways, might as well replace a bunch of parts for better ones while I'm at it." decision.

That always happens, especially if the person is worried that the new parts may not be compatable with the old.
Almost did the same and yet managed only $250 for getting my SIG552 outdoor ready (380fps and MARK III).

The one thing new players need to recognize is that they have to play for a few months to see what can be upgraded with good effect. Maybe reading the stickies would help those people

I've built a couple of rifles from scratch, I've upgraded some existing solid ones, I've worked on so-so/crappy ones.

Once you get into knowing what's what and what you want to it to do at the end...it's entirely possible to spend hundreds of dollars on upgrades.

This is especially true if you're starting with an "economy" or mid-level rifle and looking at every key part. You could easily spend more "upgrading" it than the cost of the original rifle.

Necessary?...that's up to the owner.

Anyways...it's not the first time upgrades have resulted in basically a new rifle in an old shell...LOL

Initially I brought the problem to a gun-doc and he explained to me what exactly the issue was. He suggested that I do some upgrading while I have everything open. So I checked out some parts and it sort of turned into: "well if I upgrade this I might as well upgrade that. And if I'm going to upgrade that then I should also upgrade this and so on and so on."

It's okay though. The externals are pretty much done so even though it's not yet functional, I have a really sexy shelf-piece.

as a friend has come to say "it's crack! crack I say!"

personally I buy all my guns on the premise that I will be upgrading them LOL. pretty much why I've stuck to clones ...

but I also have racing and custom cars in my "background" .. and the whole "well if I'm in there doing this.. might as well do this too." thing is very very prevelent.

honestly I ALMOST like building/tinkering with my airsoft guns more then taking them out and shooting them... almost..
