Initial Weapon Maintenance

Hey guys

I was just wondering what you do when you initially recieve a gun. What parts do you look at first? Which parts require cleaning and /or lubing?etc...

I am getting a GBB in a couple days and just want to know what I should do first to ensure I don't run into any immediate problems.I also want to know what to do with new AEGs, for future reference.

& yes, I did look at the Gun maintenance video thats stickied and just want more opinions.

Just check for proper lubrification of moving parts and rubbers/o-ring, etc

You never know how long the GBB have been drying on a shelf at the shop you bought it

EDIT: Oh and dont forget, use silicone oil and nothing else

Put some oil in the moving parts such as the hammer assembly, work it in by cycling the hammer, and wipe a bit of oil inside the hop up and on the end of the nozzle. Might want to empty the mag of gas and put a couple drops of oil in the hole the gas exits out of, with a couple drops on the release valve, work it in by pressing the valve a couple dozen times (most importantly, NEVER leave the mag without gas in it. Some guys will dump all the gas at the end of the day, then later complain that their mags are leaking). Grease on the slide rails would be a good idea too.

just a tip to add...when you have it field stripped the hammer will be cocked, and you WILL be tempted to press the trigger...DON'T. It's never a good idea to let the hammer fall and strike nothing but the frame/innards to stop. It's a quick way to bash bits/parts.

You can manually arrest the hammer fall when it's field stripped...but save that for later when you're more familiar with it.

Thanks for the tips. Specifically, for the release valve, do you only slightly depress it and add some oil or do you depress is the valve fully(which will let out gas), drop oil, then re-add gas?

Also, the GBB is a Glock, which has an internal hammer I believe?

Yeah...and no. There's no "internal striker" in the slide like a real glock. Field strip your pistol when you get it and take a close look at what touches what between the lower hammer/trigger mech and the upper slide.

See, you didn't specify what pistol in the original post...that's why I said just leave it cocked until you get more familiar with what you have. Some pistols 1911/hicapa/etc...have exposed hammers and you can do what stalker said and use your thumb to block it.

You can stick your thumb over the little paddle hammer of a glock...but take a good look at it first and try not to let it slip. You won't get much leverage on those...but it's not a freaking huge spring either.

Some pistols have decockers (226/USP) that let the hammer fall to a half cocked position...they're ok to decock with the slide off.

But really...there's rarely any need to drop the hammer when it's field stripped. But you'll be tempted to (everyone is)...and it's not uncommon to cause excessive wear and tear dropping the hammer without the slide in place.

graphite powder is the best dry lubricant i have ever used...........for skateboard bearings.....nothing dirty!

Another place that's good is putting it into a house lock. I'm not joking, if your house lock is a bit "sticky" just put some in and work the key in and out and it should be good as new.

DO NOT "make your own" graphite powder from mechanical pencil graphite refills. It won't be nearly as fine or evenly ground unless you have a motar and pestle or something.

I also use it on door hinges as well.
